NEW YORK, Feb 18 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 7,000 people and 150 individual organizations participated in the second annual Social Media Week, which took place between February 1st and February 5th simultaneously in New York City, Berlin, London, San Francisco, Toronto and Sao Paulo. The event was host to more than 200 events covering such topics as social media's impact on health care, technology, higher education, politics, open design, crowdsourcing, social graph optimization, PR and brand communications.
"The breadth, depth and diversity of subjects that were tackled truly underscores the far-reaching impact that social media has on society," said Toby Daniels, executive director and founder of Social Media Week. "And the extraordinary increase in attendance indicates that we are really just beginning to tap the potential of this burgeoning communications medium." Ingrid Walthers, member of the Berlin Senate Department which was Berlin's headline sponsor, said: "Social media has quickly evolved into an important factor in the Internet world and represents exciting new potential for Berlin's creative economy. The Berlin Senate Initiative 'Projekt Zukunft' (Project Future) was very happy to support Social Media Week in Berlin."
In addition to attending the events in person, participants were also able to keep up with the conversation and take part via Twitter and also watch online through live streaming. In January alone, the Social Media Week Web site attracted more than 100,000 visitors from nearly 100 countries helping to achieve the goal of becoming a global platform for conversation, connectivity and learning.
Organizers have also announced that they will be adding another conference in September, focusing this time on six new cities. The selection process has already begun, however organizers can still register their interest by visiting http://socialmediaweek.org/getting-involved.
