Among the Soldiers reenlisting were a Silver Star recipient, combat veterans, a Hurricane Katrina volunteer and an expectant mother. In the days prior to the ceremony, the 60 Soldiers and their families toured the Pentagon, the U.S. Capitol, the Library of Congress, and witnessed a wreath laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.
The National Capitol Reenlistment Ceremony gives the U.S. Army Reserve, currently 206,000 strong, a unique opportunity to recognize high-performance Soldiers who have chosen to commit to continued service (thousands of Soldiers re-enlist year-round). Lt. Gen. Jack Stultz, Chief, Army Reserve, performed the oath of office.
"By re-enlisting here today, these Soldiers demonstrated their commitment to our nation and their communities, and they showed the selfless service and personal courage required to protect our way of life and keep all of our families safe," Stultz said. "As part of the next generation of Army Reserve leadership, they will ensure our ability to shape the force to meet the security challenges of the future."
Army Reserve Soldiers have played a vital role in every American military and humanitarian mission of the past 102 years. They served in WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam; they provided support for public-works projects during The Great Depression. Most recently about 250 Army Reserve Soldiers deployed to Haiti to provide disaster relief in the wake of the January earthquake, and around 15,000 Army Reserve Soldiers are currently deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
