Singapore Is Ready To Welcome The World To The First Youth Olympic Games With 99 Days To Go
SINGAPORE, May 7 /PRNewswire/ -- With 99 days to the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG), Singapore is ready to welcome the world, with a big bang celebration at the new SCAPE Youth Space this evening.
Workforce readiness is the key highlight with more than 70 staff and volunteers presenting the uniforms that they will wear during the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (Singapore 2010). Eight types of uniforms were presented for the roles of Sport Presenters, Technical Officials, Victory Ceremony (Athlete/Presenter Escorts, Flag Bearers, Mascot and Medal Bearers), Torch Bearers and Support Runners, and Workforce.
Witnessed by the Prime Minister of Singapore, Mr. LEE Hsien Loong, the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC) workforce at the event took a pledge to reaffirm their commitment to organise a successful first-ever YOG and deliver a memorable and meaningful experience to all participants. The pledge reads:
"We, the members of SYOGOC, commit to uphold the Olympic Values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect; to lead by example; and inspire the youth of the world to embrace, embody, and express the Olympic Values in their lives. By our actions, we will create: an unforgettable Games experience; a more sporting Singapore; and a lasting legacy for the Olympic Movement."
The event was also graced by Minister for Education and Second Minister for Defence, Dr. NG Eng Hen; Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Dr. Vivian BALAKRISHNAN; Minister of State for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Mrs. YU-FOO Yee Shoon; Mayor, North East District and Senior Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports and the Minister for Transport, Mr. TEO Ser Luck.
Mr. Sergey BUBKA, Chairman of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission for the first Summer Youth Olympic Games, Coordination Commission members, Mr. Gilbert FELLI, Executive Director of the IOC, Mr. Essar GABRIEL, Head of YOG as well as the IOC YOG team joined in the celebration after the successful of the 4th Coordination Commission meeting in Singapore.
The 99 Day Celebration saw Worldwide Olympic Partners and domestic marketing partners coming together to host the Singapore 2010 Sports Carnival and promote Singapore 2010 merchandise. There were stage performances by a Parkour act and music by Singapore Idols, and pop rock and indie band, Electrico.
Singapore 2010 – Blazing the Trail
Singapore will be hosting the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) from 14 to 26 August 2010. The Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games will receive some 5,000 athletes and officials from the 205 National Olympic Committees (NOCs), along with an estimated 1,200 media representatives, 20,000 local and international volunteers, and more than 370,000 spectators. Young athletes - aged between 14 and 18 years - will compete in 26 sports and take part in a Culture and Education Programme.
The Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games aims to inspire youth around the world to embrace, embody and express the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect. It will create a lasting sports, culture and education legacy for Singapore and youths from around the world, as well as enhance and elevate the sporting culture locally and regionally.
