Seven Princesses Begin Their Reign as the 2011 Royal Court for the Pasadena Tournament of Roses®
Month-Long Tryout Process Began with More than 1,000 Pasadena-area Young Ladies
PASADENA, Calif., Oct. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The seven members of the 2011 Tournament of Roses Royal Court were announced today at Tournament House from a group of 31 finalists. As ambassadors of the Tournament of Roses, the Royal Court members will attend more than 150 community and media functions leading up to the 122nd Rose Parade® presented by Honda and 97th Rose Bowl Game® on Saturday, January 1, 2011.

The seven Rose Princesses are: Tatyane Anaid Berrios (#946), 17, Arcadia High School; Sarah Christine Fredrickson (#421), 17, Maranatha High School; Evanne Elizabeth Friedmann (#433), 17, La Canada High School; Jessica Michelle Montoya (#745), 17, Flintridge Preparatory School; Tenaya Miyoko Senzaki (#130), 17, Pasadena High School; Kathryn Morris Thomson (#201), 17, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy and Michelle Kaye Washington (#833), 18, Pasadena City College.
The announcement follows a month-long process in which more than 1,000 Pasadena-area young women participated. Selections were based on a range of qualities including public speaking ability, poise, academic achievement, community involvement and personality.
"These seven young ladies are outstanding role models for the youth of Pasadena," said Edward Afsharian, Chairman of the Queen and Court Committee. "They were selected from a pool of the most talented and poised in the Pasadena area. They are truly remarkable and will be wonderful ambassadors for the Tournament of Roses."
Rose Princess Tatyane Anaid Berrios, 17, is an Arcadia resident and attends Arcadia High School. She is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Care for Kids and the Red Cross Club. She also volunteers at her church and with local elementary schools. In her free time, she enjoys dancing, hiking, drawing and swimming. She is also passionate about traveling as she feels it provides her with a better understanding of the world and educates her in the different cultures, traditions and languages while making her appreciate what the United States has to offer. Tatyane speaks Spanish and Portuguese and plans to pursue a career as a pediatrician. Her parents are Ariel and Leticia Berrios. She has three siblings Yanitza, 16, Ariel, 9, and Efrain, 6.
Rose Princess Sarah Christine Fredrickson, 17, attends Maranatha High School and lives in Altadena. She is the president of both the Adventure Club and the Sports Medicine Club and leader of the swim team at school. An avid horseback rider, she also volunteers at Danny's Farm, a stable created to provide meaningful employment and volunteer opportunities for adults and teenagers with disabilities, and previously worked with Blue Shadows, an organization dedicated to teaching children to ride. Aside from riding, volunteering, and swimming, Sarah enjoys building puzzles and any activity outdoors, especially hiking. She hopes to study biology or nursing in college and pursue a career in nursing. Her parents are John and Tammy Fredrickson. She has a twin brother, Tucker, 17, and one younger brother Samuel, 13.
Rose Princess Evanne Elizabeth Friedmann, 17, attends La Canada High School and resides in La Canada Flintridge. She is a member of the National Charity League, the National Honor Society, and the California Scholarship Federation and has been in the Girl Scouts for 13 years. Evanne is active in the concert choir at her school and serves as the senior class videographer. She was a model between the ages of 8 and 12, which sparked a passion for film and performance. She is part of an improv group called Comedy Sportz and sees herself as a director or editor for films and media in the future. In her free time she enjoys making videos for both fun and school and likes to play classic games such as Solitaire, Chess and Scrabble. Her parents are Kurt and Gayle Friedmann and she has two older sisters, Haley, 21, and Lynne, 19.
Rose Princess Jessica Michelle Montoya, 17, attends Flintridge Preparatory School and has lived in Pasadena her entire life. She is a member of the Spanish Honor Society and the Flintridge Press. She is an active soccer player and is a member of the club soccer team and previously, her high school's varsity soccer team. She was previously active with the LEO Club and with the school's spring musical. She enjoys singing, soccer and playing the piano. She plans to study physical therapy after high school and pursue a career in the field. Her parents are Michael and JoAnn Montoya and she has one sister, Andria, 20.
Rose Princess Tenaya Miyoko Senzaki, 17, lives in Altadena and attends Pasadena High School. She is section leader in the marching band, first chair in the concert band, a member of the Jazz band and editor in chief of the yearbook. The parade route along Colorado Boulevard is nothing new to her as she has previously marched with the PUSD honor band in two Rose Parades. Tenaya is currently in the process of earning her Gold Award in Girl Scouts and was the winner of the Wells 21st Century Leadership Award as well as the George Eastman Young Leaders Award. She enjoys playing clarinet and tenor saxophone as well as soccer and graphic design. She hopes to attend UC San Diego after college and plans to study psychology and graphic design. Her mother is Mary Senzaki and she has one sister, Sierra, 19.
Rose Princess Kathryn (Katie) Thomson, 17, is from Pasadena and attends Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy. She is the founder and president of the Crossroads Mentoring Program, a program providing mentors to young girls ages 10-12 in South Central Los Angeles. She is also a retreat leader at her school and advertising manager for the newspaper. She plays varsity water polo and has played on her school's varsity tennis team for the last four years. Her hobbies include playing the piano, reading, hiking and spending time with her family. Katie plans to study political science in college and pursue a career in law thereafter. Her parents are John and Tina Thomson and she has one brother, Charles, 13.
Rose Princess Michelle Kay Washington, 18, lives in Pasadena and attends Pasadena City College (PCC). She is active with Encompass Organization, Project Light, Ryman Arts, HROCK Choir and HROCK missions. Before attending PCC, Michelle attended Maranatha High School where she and a group of classmates won in the Tournament of Roses' "Roses on Parade" art contest. In high school she was president of the art club and a member of the speech and debate team as well as the swim team and was involved in the school musical. In her free time, she enjoys writing poetry, painting, drawing, performing arts, modeling and designing. She plans to one day own her own company that will provide opportunities for students to earn art scholarships. Her parents are Henry and Sharon Washington. She has two siblings, Adam, 16, and Andrew, 14.
The 2011 Rose Queen® will be announced at Tournament House on Tuesday, October 19 at 9:30 a.m. The newly selected Rose Queen and Royal Court will reign for an entire year until the new court is selected in October of 2011.
