SEIU to Organize, Engage Workers in Political Advocacy & Work in Strategic Partnerships with Sister Unions to Improve Lives of Workers
WASHINGTON, May 10 /PRNewswire/ -- This weekend, the new president of the Service Employee International Union (SEIU) outlined a set of direct set goals in order to move our union forward to improve our members' lives and the lives of all workers who are struggling to make ends meet in this economy.
SEIU asserted our ongoing commitment to organizing as a vehicle for the change workers need, our intention to engage in politics in ways that directly improve the public policies that impact workers and our desire to restore our relationships throughout the American labor movement so we can collectively stand and act on behalf of all workers in this country.
SEIU plans to engage in conversations with sister unions throughout the labor movement to discuss our shared interests. However, despite a recent media report, SEIU has no intention of organizing grocery workers. SEIU fully recognizes the food sector as a core industry of sister union United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), which represents more than a million supermarket workers.
As we move forward, SEIU looks forward to developing strategic partnerships with sister unions throughout the labor movement to improve the lives of workers and their families.
