GREAT NECK, N.Y., July 12, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Security Management Systems (SMS), a leading integrator of IP-based security solutions, has received the coveted SAMMY Award for "Integrated Installation of the Year" from Security Sales and Integration (SSI) magazine.
The 16th annual Award was presented to SMS for their work at New York's landmark Peter Cooper Village/Stuyvesant Town apartment complex – a group of 110 buildings spread across an 80-acre campus housing more than 30,000 residents and visitors.
"We are proud of the final product and the recognition we have received from both our clients and industry peers," said Al Albrecht, president and founder of SMS. This achievement is a testimony to our staff, their hard work and team effort." Our success is due in part to everyone involved, including the manufacturers who supported our efforts and the owner's management team who worked closely with the SMS team to provide their input and coordination. It should serve as a model for future projects of this scale."
"The Integrated Installation of the Year program judges entries based on innovation; systems design; integration of at least three electronic systems; seamlessness of installation; uniqueness of application and end-user satisfaction," explains SSI Editor-in-Chief, Scott Goldfine. "Security Management Systems' entry excelled in all of these areas, with an impressive project of uncommon scope and integration on a grand scale. SMS shined the brightest in a competition that in any other year, one of the other finalists would have likely captured the top honor. I congratulate SMS on its outstanding effort and professionalism."
SMS was contracted by Rose Associates, manager of the housing complex, to undertake a 2.5 year project to design and build a security solution across the 80-acre complex. Included in the design was the creation of a new, custom security command center and deployment of over 1,100 video cameras, 950 access control points, VOIP emergency phones, and parking controls for six garages.
"The level of quality and sophistication found in this extremely complex installation is something that very, very few firms could have provided, much less supported for many years following the successful installation," explains Adam R. Rose, co-president of Rose Associates, Inc.
The sheer magnitude of the project alone is impressive, but what set this project apart to earn the SAMMY was SMS' success at implementing a best-in-class security system, on time, on budget and without downtime or disruption of services in this sprawling iconic housing community.
The SMS Award-Winning System
The enterprise system incorporates both SMS innovations and best in class solutions provided by a number of technology partners. SMS engineers devised a novel solution that would fit space restrictions and satisfy significant power supply requirements. The firm designed an innovative, low-voltage power and data grid to concentrate and distribute power from 35 field distribution panel (FDP) where network fiber was also available. The grid is an impressive system with a custom distribution frame located in all 110 buildings. Camera, lock and UPS power for all the access control and security cameras in each building tower are terminated in the custom distribution frame for local redistribution supported by this low-voltage grid.
SMS developed a custom-designed command center with four workstations supporting an array of twenty-four monitors. Each workstation is managed by a graphical user interface (GUI) where icons are associated with each of the 1,100 cameras and 950 access control doors for call up and control.
SMS selected AMAG's Symmetry as the integration platform for both access control and video surveillance allowing video data and alarms to be archived as a single event. On a select number of the Pelco cameras, SMS deployed the Verint Nextiva analytics platform for enhanced situational awareness. With more than 1,100 cameras recording video 24/7, the system requires a massive amount of video storage capability, with more than 320TB available on the Nexsan storage systems.
SMS also provides managed services with a suite of software that monitors critical infrastructure at Peter Cooper Village/Stuyvesant Town development as well as other large and smaller clients. Installed agents on the network infrastructure automatically identify potential service issues. "If any issues arise with the functionality of servers, storage devices, applications and network infrastructure, SMS manages the issue," explains SMS Vice President Craig Albrecht.
