Seattle Artist Bringing His Popular BIG APPETITES Food Photographs to Art Toronto
SEATTLE, Oct. 19, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Seattle artist Christopher Boffoli will be visiting Toronto next week to meet with collectors and attend the Toronto International Art Fair where his local gallery representatives, Marcia Rafelman Fine Arts (MRFA), will be exhibiting new work from his famous photo series "Big Appetites."
The photographs, which feature tiny figures shot against real food backdrops, went viral last year after their exposure on the Toronto-based website 500px.com. MRFA was the first international gallery to represent the work. The photographs have now been published in more than 90 countries, and are represented by top fine art galleries around the world. One of Boffoli's fine art prints was also part of the SNAP! Toronto 2012 art auction last spring, which benefitted the AIDS Committee of Toronto (ACT).
"I'm very excited about attending Art Toronto this year as it's regarded as one of the best and most important art shows in the world," said Boffoli. "I'll also be delighted to meet many of the art collectors and fans of this photo series who have so warmly received my work in Toronto."
Boffoli's attendance at Art Toronto comes on the heels of very successful summer shows in New York City, London and last month's Art Platform Los Angeles. The work will also exhibit this autumn in Singapore and Seattle. The Big Appetites photographs are subject of a forthcoming book by Workman Publishing (NY) planned for release next fall. Some of the new images photographed for the book will be exhibited at Art Toronto for the first time.
"My book deadline is rapidly approaching so I have been shooting a lot of new work lately," Boffoli says. "While I'm in Toronto I'll certainly be seeking out culinary inspiration. Who knows – maybe Timbits will make it into my work."
Employing the components of toys and food – two of the most common elements in every culture in the world – Big Appetites successfully navigates gaps in language and culture. In addition to humour and surprise the images in the series inspire, the work is also intended to offer commentary on American overconsumption and food spectatorship.
Images for editorial publication are available upon request from the photographer.
