BILLERICA, Mass., Dec. 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Seahorse Bioscience, a part of Agilent Technologies and the world leader in tools for cell metabolism research, has announced that The Scientist magazine has cited its XF Cell Energy Phenotype Test Kit as a 2015 Top 10 Innovation.
For eight years running, The Scientist has sought out the best laboratory and research products of the year. "We are very excited to present another fine crop of tools and technologies," stated The Scientist editor-in-chief Mary Beth Aberlin. "Our expert panel of independent judges had a very difficult job picking the top life science products from a very competitive list of submissions."
The XF Cell Energy Phenotype Test Kit is a reagent kit and analysis method that allows researchers to rapidly determine the Energy Phenotype of cells, plot on an Energy Map, and easily compare metabolic phenotypes across cell types and treatment conditions. Also notable is that the Seahorse XF96 Extracellular Flux Analyzer was cited as a 2009 Top Ten Innovation.
"Metabolism is inextricably linked to -- and may even drive -- many pathologies as well as normal cellular functions, so metabolic changes can have a huge impact on cellular systems," stated Sierra Kent, Ph.D., associate product manager, Consumables, Seahorse Bioscience. "The XF Cell Energy Phenotype Test generates a holistic, functional view of the metabolic phenotype of cells, and the resulting Energy Map can act as a guide to additional experiments to elucidate the mechanisms of energy metabolism within the cells."
Used with the Seahorse XFp Extracellular Flux Analyzer, the XF Cell Energy Phenotype Test Kit measures the utilization of each major energy pathway of a cell -- mitochondrial respiration and glycolysis -- first under the starting medium conditions, and then upon injection of a stressor mix that induces an energy demand. Mapping a cell's Energy Phenotype provides an easy-to-understand view of the role of energy metabolism, allowing researchers to create a complete picture of the disease or function of interest in a single, less-than-one-hour test. This test is the easiest and best way to understand which energy pathway cells prefer. With a better understanding of the connection of physiological traits of cells with genomic and proteomic data, researchers are generating new insights into cellular metabolic function, leading to a greater understanding of and new treatments of disease.
