ORLANDO, Fla., Feb. 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- As healthcare organizations look to operate more cost-effectively under new delivery and payment models such as "accountable care," healthcare executives must ensure they are optimizing labor resources — a significant portion of operating budgets — without sacrificing quality patient care. To meet that need, SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) today announced a new business intelligence (BI) offering designed to help healthcare organizations improve productivity and increase patient satisfaction. The announcement was made at healthcare IT expo HIMSS, being held in Orlando, Florida, Feb. 20–24.

The SAP® BusinessObjects™ Staff Productivity Management for Healthcare application includes preconfigured dashboards and reports, along with functionality to track key performance indicators — enabling greater insight into staffing productivity such as worked hours per patient day, wages, workload statistics and FTEs at the departmental or cost-center level. As a result, departmental and nursing unit managers will be able to better organize staffing to patient care requirements, and help build and maintain a skilled workforce via recruitment and training measures. (See related video story, titled "New Solution to Better Understand Staffing Needs at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.")
SAP has worked closely on the new application with customers such as The Johns Hopkins Hospital, the flagship of Johns Hopkins Medicine. With more than 30,000 employees nationwide, Johns Hopkins Medicine is a $5-billion global health enterprise and one of the most renowned providers in the United States.
"SAP developed this application to help healthcare organizations minimize their financial risk while maximizing clinical quality outcomes," said John Papandrea, senior vice president and global Healthcare sector head, SAP. "The software tracks risk management issues commonly found in healthcare facilities — such as patient falls, medication errors and hospital-acquired infections — that not only threaten patient well-being but can lead to medical liability and reduced reimbursements. With access to up-to-date information, healthcare organizations can detect problems earlier, investigate root causes more quickly and address issues proactively to help minimize their impact."
