SAFE Praises New Nuclear Guarantees
WASHINGTON, Feb. 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Securing America's Future Energy (SAFE) praised President Obama's announcement today of federal loan guarantees to begin the construction of a new nuclear power facility in Georgia. The guarantees will total $8.3 billion and will enable the construction of two new reactors.

"Expanded nuclear power will be a key part of our energy future," SAFE President and CEO Robbie Diamond said. "Nuclear is the only proven, scalable, non-intermittent, emissions-free source of base load power currently in existence. If we are to replace our petroleum-dependent cars and trucks—and that is truly the only real, long-term solution to the energy security threats we face—the best replacement would be a transportation system based on electric power. Though we today have spare capacity in our power sector, eventually, we will need to increase generation. If we want to do that in a clean, efficient way, nuclear power clearly must be a major part of the answer."
In its 2008 National Strategy for Energy Security, SAFE recommended a significant increase in loan guarantees for nuclear power. In 2007, nuclear power accounted for nearly 20 percent of the power generated in the United States. No new nuclear plant has been completed and brought on line since 1996, and no nuclear plant ordered after 1977 has been completed and brought on line.
Securing America's Future Energy (SAFE) is an action-oriented, nonpartisan organization that aims to reduce America's dependence on oil and improve U.S. energy security to bolster national security and strengthen the economy.
