Recognition Awarded to only 1% of Nation's Hospitals; a Reflection of Consistent Top Clinical Performance
LAGUNA HILLS, Calif., Feb. 23, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- For the second consecutive year, Saddleback Memorial Medical Center has been named as one of only 1 percent of the 4,500 hospitals nationwide to receive the Healthgrades 2016 America's 50 Best Hospitals Award™. This prestigious honor recognizes Saddleback Memorial for its consistent, year-over-year superior clinical performance, high quality care and superior patient outcomes as measured by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.
"Once again, I'm so proud to be a part of this outstanding organization, and truly honored to pay tribute to our 3,400 extraordinary physicians, employees and volunteers as well as the thousands of outstanding donors and Saddleback Memorial supporters," says Saddleback Memorial Chief Executive Officer Steve Geidt. "Delivering exceptional, compassionate quality care is part of our DNA and why we are so thrilled to be recognized for all the hard work achieved here day in and day out."
The 50 recipients of the America's 50 Best Hospitals Award™ stand out among the rest for overall clinical excellence across a broad spectrum of care. During the 2016 study period (2012-2014), these hospitals showed superior performance in clinical outcomes for patients in the Medicare population across at least 21 of 32 of the most common inpatient conditions and procedures —as measured by objective performance data that includes risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications.
Variation in hospital performance exists locally as well as nationally. In the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana, CA area, Saddleback Memorial is one of only four hospitals (out of 51 eligible) that received the America's 50 Best Hospitals Award™. Additionally, Saddleback Memorial was also recognized as a Recipient of the Healthgrades Distinguished Hospital Award – Clinical Excellence™ for 7 years in a row (2010-2016). "As physicians, we appreciate that Healthgrades objectively measures and quantifies the human components of outstanding, compassionate care," says Saddleback Memorial Chief of Staff Daniel La Mont, MD. "Results like these take a finely coordinated team of health care professionals, all dedicated to their patients every hour, every day of the year."
Recipients of this award had a 24.4 percent lower risk adjusted mortality rate across 19 procedures and conditions where in-hospital mortality was the clinical outcome, compared to all other hospitals. During this same period, if all other hospitals had performed at that level, 164,116 lives could potentially have been saved. For example, patients treated at a hospital that has achieved the America's 50 Best Hospitals Award™ had, on average, a 28.5 percent lower risk of dying during their hospital stay for Heart Failure than if treated at a hospital that did not receive the award.
"Our analysis shows that there is tremendous variation in care, so it's important for consumers to carefully research and choose a hospital," said Evan Marks, Chief Strategy Officer, Healthgrades. "We commend the recipients of the America's 50 Best Hospital Award for delivering exceptional clinical outcomes that help them stand out from their peers in terms of overall clinical performance."
