Robert S. Shumake Scholarship Foundation Announces 2011 Winners
Six Midwestern Seniors Honored in Annual Academic Competition
DETROIT, Sept. 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Robert S. Shumake Scholarship Foundation announced the winners of the 7th Annual Robert S. Shumake Scholarship. The foundation will award a $2,500 scholarship to six high school seniors from Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio in a competition that highlights academic achievement and extracurricular activity. The awards banquet recently took place at the luxurious Detroit Seafood Market. 2011 Robert S. Shumake Scholarship Winners:
- Chris Wyte (Morehouse College)
- Sekou Keith Shorter Jr. (Saginaw Valley State University)
- Abiola Akinpelu (Wayne State University)
- Cheyenne Peters (Michigan State University)
- Richard Plowden (University of Michigan)
- Cassandra Nelson (Kentucky State University)
Robert Shumake is the Founder and CEO of Inheritance Capital Group which was named one of Black Enterprise magazine's "Top 20 Businesses to Watch in 2011"; his vision, The Robert S. Shumake Scholarship Relays draws top talent of track and field teams from Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio to go head to head in a series of athletic competitions. The Shumake Relay is the largest private relay in the Midwest, serving 8,000+ participants and the first of its kind to award its participants for both athletic and academic accomplishments. In 2012 the relays will welcome athletes from neighboring Canadian schools as well. Players on each of the 80+ teams that have the highest grade point averages receive acknowledgment and awards. When a school team participates in the relays this makes other seniors from that school eligible to apply for a Shumake scholarship by writing a 250 word essay on the importance of education, home ownership and entrepreneurship.
In addition to the essay, applicants are required to meet the minimum GPA requirement of 2.5 and be involved with extracurricular activities. The top six submissions are selected and a point system is used to determine which essays are the most exceptional, all factors are considered to determine winners.
