MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., May 17, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --
WHAT IS HAPPENING, WHERE & WHEN: RethinkDB is announcing that it has created Horizon, a brand new JavaScript application platform, specifically designed for agile teams or enterprises building and running real-time web, mobile and Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications. Backed by Highland Capital Partners, Andreessen Horowitz, Draper Fisher Jurvetson and individuals including YouTube cofounder Steve Chen and Kleiner Perkins partner Russell Siegelman, RethinkDB is making Horizon available starting 6 AM Pacific time today.
WHAT IT IS: Horizon's easy-to-use, fully-integrated and customizable backend pairs open-source Node.js middleware with the RethinkDB database, providing all the commercial-strength tools and libraries necessary for front-end developers to begin immediately building and running their applications. Horizon provides the freedom to host data locally or to any cloud.
Starting Tuesday, individuals and teams can also sign up for a brand new purpose-built cloud infrastructure for hosting and managing Horizon applications called "Horizon Cloud." It is scheduled to launch before the end of the year with more details to be unveiled this summer.
WHY THE HORIZON LAUNCH IS SIGNIFICANT: Dramatically reducing time to market, a company that might otherwise take six months to put a new application into production would take two to three months using Horizon. Horizon users always maintain control over their data and applications, so they can avoid the major tradeoffs of working with popular backend-as-a-service providers. And, because it is built on RethinkDB's unique real-time push architecture, developers can continue to add features and complexity to their Horizon apps without running into the performance and scalability issues inherent to platforms built upon databases that have to poll for updates.
WHO THIS IS FOR: Based on feedback from over 137,000 RethinkDB users, Horizon was created to address the top challenges for developers, operations and senior management. RethinkDB is currently being used across the government, health and medicine, engineering and sciences, industrials, retail, finance and technology sectors. Institutions and companies with RethinkDB apps in production include NASA, gaming developer CMUNE, and Fortune 500 corporations including one of America's largest mutual funds.
HOW CAN PEOPLE GET IT: Developers can learn how to download and install the Horizon framework by visiting the Horizon.io landing page (http://horizon.io). Via a promotion with Digital Ocean, developers can run their Horizon apps for very little, or choose to host their apps anywhere they like. RethinkDB provides commercial services, including development, production and training support, with managed services coming soon with the launch of Horizon Cloud.
ABOUT RETHINKDB
Based in Mountain View, CA, RethinkDB was founded in May 2009 by CEO Slava Akhmechet and Michael Glukhovsky. Originally funded by Y-Combinator and backed by Highland Capital Partners, Andreessen Horowitz, and individuals including Steve Chen and Russell Siegelman, the startup employs 18 employees as of April 2016. It develops open-source programming environments and tools specifically designed to help companies and enterprises develop real-time scalable applications rapidly, so that projects consume fewer engineering resources. Its first product, RethinkDB, released into production in January 2015, is the first and only open-source JSON database on the market with a real-time push architecture, eliminating performance and scaling issues associated with competing databases that poll for changes.
