Republican Brian Birdwell Files Papers for State Senate
Announces Launch of www.brianbirdwell.net
GRANBURY, Texas, March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Hood County resident Lt. Col. (Ret.) Brian Birdwell, a recipient of the Bronze Star in the Persian Gulf War and a survivor of the 2001 terrorist attack on the Pentagon, today announced that he has filed his papers with the Texas Secretary of State as a candidate in the May 8 special election for Senate District 22.
"As a fourth-generation native Texan, resident of District 22, and proud military veteran, I'm excited about the opportunity to take this important step in our campaign to bring authentic, conservative leadership to the Texas Senate. Mel and I are so encouraged by the support we have received since announcing our candidacy just two weeks ago. This grass-roots campaign will be true to the principles of fiscal responsibility, jobs and economic prosperity, property rights, second amendment freedoms, sanctity of life, and standing up for the Constitution. The government takeover of health care by President Obama and liberals in Washington, D.C. violates our freedom, will bankrupt the nation, and is outside the bounds of the Constitution. As State Senator, I will support Attorney General Greg Abbott's lawsuit challenging this legislation."
Birdwell also announced the launch of his campaign web site, www.brianbirdwell.net, where interested citizens can volunteer, donate, and learn more about Brian and his campaign. In the coming days, the site will be enhanced with additional photographs, video content, and a growing list of endorsements. Supporters may also support Brian's campaign on Facebook at Brian Birdwell for Texas Senate.
Birdwell was a staff officer at the Pentagon on 9/11 when American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the building. Over 60% of his body was badly burned, and he has endured 39 operations to rebuild his body. His story of perseverance and recovery, despite incredible odds, was chronicled by state and national media and has inspired thousands of citizens around the country. Brian and his wife Mel authored "Refined by Fire: A Family's Triumph of Love and Faith," which tells their story of survival. Birdwell was awarded a Bronze Star for service in the Persian Gulf War. For his wounds at the Pentagon, he was awarded the Purple Heart, and upon retirement received the Legion of Merit Award.
Birdwell has gained prominence for his work on behalf of burn survivors, both civilian and military. A lifelong Republican, Birdwell was a featured speaker at the 2006 Republican State Convention in San Antonio and was Keynote Speaker for the 2007 Texas State Presidential Straw Poll in Ft. Worth. He was a 2008 delegate to the RPT State Convention in Houston and is Immediate Past Vice President of the Hood County Republican Club. Brian has served as a national speaker for WallBuilders, a pro-family organization that presents America's religious, moral, and constitutional heritage. He has been a guest on Fox News, NBC Today Show, CBS Early Show, CNN News, a panelist on Hannity's Great American Panel and has been profiled in media outlets such as the Washington Post, U.S. News and World Report, and the Los Angeles Times.
Brian and Mel have been married for 22 years and they have one son, Matt, who is a junior at Texas Tech. They attend Lakeside Baptist Church in Granbury.
