Renetta Tull To Represent U.S. Before Global Engineering Deans Council
MADRID and BALTIMORE, Oct. 28, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The Global Engineering Deans Council (GEDC) and The Airbus Group (Airbus) in their meeting in Madrid, Spain announced the three finalists for the 2015 GEDC Airbus Diversity Award. This international award recognizes people and projects worldwide which have encouraged students of all profiles and backgrounds to study and succeed in engineering. The GEDC has named Dr. Renetta Garrison Tull as one of three finalists for this prestigious award for her work to increase the participation of women and under-represented and indigenous people in engineering. She is the only American and woman selected as a finalist this year. Dr. Tull is the Associate Vice Provost for Graduate Student Professional Development and Postdoctoral Affairs at The University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) and Director of PROMISE: Maryland's Alliance for Graduation Education and Professoriate (AGEP) for the University System of Maryland. She holds degrees in electrical engineering from Howard University, Washington, DC and graduate degrees in electrical engineering and speech science from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL.
"Diversity in engineering begins with personal relationships and that leads to community. Community leads to exposure, exposure leads to skills, and skills facilitate opportunities. This path needs to be available to all students, from all backgrounds," Tull says.
Inspired by the life of her former student, the late Jessica Soto Perez, Dr. Tull has influenced the careers of more than 10,000 graduate and undergraduate STEM students and early career faculty across the U.S., Puerto Rico, and South America. She will travel to Adelaide, Australia in late November to present her global diversity initiative to Airbus Group executives and the GEDC with the two remaining finalists from Germany and the United Arab Emirates.
