Relmada Therapeutics Announces Notice of Acceptance of Key Patent in Australia Covering NMDA Receptor Antagonist d-Methadone for Treatment of Psychiatric Symptoms
Additional intellectual property protection to expand international markets for a potential paradigm changing treatment for major depression
NEW YORK, Oct. 27, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Relmada Therapeutics, Inc. (OTCQB: RLMD), a clinical-stage company developing novel therapies for the treatment of central nervous system (CNS) diseases, announced today that IP Australia has issued a notice of acceptance for patent application number 2013323645 for "D-methadone for the treatment of psychiatric symptoms." The patent application provides broad coverage for d-Methadone (dextromethadone, REL-1017), an N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, in Australia as a treatment for symptoms associated with a range of psychological and psychiatric disorders including depression, anxiety, fatigue, and mood instability.
"As we work to advance our development program for dextromethadone, we also continue to take all steps to support the highest achievable levels of protection for our intellectual property in markets around the world," said Sergio Traversa, CEO of Relmada Therapeutics. "This latest milestone provides strong additional IP protection in a strategically and commercially important part of the world for the development of dextromethadone as a rapidly acting depression treatment."
In April 2017, Relmada announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted Fast Track designation for d-Methadone for the adjunctive treatment of major depressive disorder. The planned phase 2a clinical trial for d-Methadone will be a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in patients with major depressive disorder. The study will assess changes in depressive symptoms as well as the safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetics of two dose levels of REL-1017 as rapid acting adjunctive treatment in patients affected by major depression.
About dextromethadone (d-methadone, REL 1017)
Relmada's dextromethadone is being developed as a rapidly acting oral agent for the treatment of depression with the potential to treat an array of additional neurologic disorders. Working through the same brain mechanisms as ketamine, a non-competitive NMDA channel antagonist, but potentially lacking its adverse side effects, dextromethadone is fundamentally differentiated from all currently FDA-approved antidepressants, as well as all atypical antipsychotics used adjunctively. In April 2017, the FDA granted Fast Track designation for dextromethadone for the adjunctive treatment of major depressive disorder.
