Refugees International to Honor Senator Bill Frist at 31st Anniversary Gala
WASHINGTON, April 21 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Thursday, May 6th, Refugees International (RI) will host its 31st Anniversary Dinner, honoring Senator William H. Frist with the 2010 McCall-Pierpaoli Humanitarian Award. Senator Frist will be recognized for his lifelong commitment to serving vulnerable people around the world, including his leadership as a medical ambassador to Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Chad. Immediately following natural disasters including the tsunami in Sri Lanka, Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana and the recent earthquake in Haiti, Senator Frist has traveled into crisis zones, delivering medical assistance and humanitarian leadership.
The McCall-Pierpaoli Humanitarian Award honors those who have demonstrated extraordinary leadership and commitment to humanitarian action. The award was created in memory of David and Penny McCall and Yvette Pierpaoli, who died during an RI mission to Albania in 1999. Past recipients include Kofi and Nane Annan, Ambassador John Danforth, Julia Taft, Lord and Lady Malloch Brown, Mia and Ronan Farrow and Ted Turner.
This year's program will also include a tribute to the late Kenneth H. Bacon, President of Refugees International from 2001-2009 and an introduction to RI's new President, Dan Glickman, who recently joined RI after serving as Chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America. He also served as a Kansas congressman from 1977-1995 and as Secretary of Agriculture from 1995-2001.
