Quantum Awarded Contract by Lockheed Martin to Supply Fuel Metering and Energy Storage Technology for Space Program
IRVINE, Calif., May 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide, Inc. (Nasdaq: QTWW), today announced that it has been awarded a contract for expanded support of Lockheed Martin's Space Systems' development of ISIS (Integrated Sensor is the Structure) airship powered by a Regenerative Fuel Cell (RFC). Quantum will supply critical hydrogen metering systems in conjunction with the hydrogen and oxygen storage systems that it is currently supplying to Lockheed Martin.
The ISIS uses solar rays during daylight hours to generate renewable electricity that electrolyzes water to generate hydrogen and oxygen to run the RFC at night. Quantum has worked closely with Lockheed Martin to develop one of the lightest advanced carbon fiber composite hydrogen storage vessels in the world for this application. Quantum will expand the scope of the program by developing precision fuel metering devices that are compatible with a wide array of environmental conditions.
"Quantum is a world leader in ultra-lightweight energy storage technology, having our roots in developing and supplying carbon-composite hydrogen and natural gas tanks to leading global automakers for fuel cell and alternative fuel vehicles," said Alan P. Niedzwiecki, President and CEO of Quantum. "We are pleased to work with Lockheed Martin to further advance Quantum's gaseous fuel metering technology, for applications involving hydrogen and oxygen for the ISIS program."
ISIS is a large stratospheric airship of unprecedented proportions, carrying an integral radar sensor that can detect small valuable targets from a distance of several hundreds of kilometers away. ISIS has the potential to revolutionize persistent theater-wide intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. Lockheed Martin will build the prototype airship for the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) under a $400 million contract.
