EXPERT ALERTS:
Trans-Pacific Partnership a 'Game Changer'
Raj Bhala
Associate Dean for International and Comparative Law and Rice Distinguished Professor
University of Kansas School of Law
"The Trans-Pacific Partnership is the largest free trade agreement in human history. It's the most important event in international trade since the birth of the World Trade Organization in 1995. It has enormous economic, political and national security consequences. No matter what one's specialty area in business or in law, the TPP will affect that specialty. It's one of the instances where the word 'game changer' is not overused. It's actually quite surprising that so little attention has been paid to it in the United States."
Bhala is the author of the fourth edition of "International Trade Law: An Interdisciplinary, Non-Western Textbook," which includes coverage of the TPP. He can discuss the TPP, international trade, international trade law, negotiations of the deal, likely ramifications and more.

Plugging Your Financial Leaks
Bijan Golkar, CFP®
CEO/Senior Advisor
FPC Investment Advisory, Inc.
Currently, income taxes have risen to a top rate of 39.6%. There are also a few additional taxes for high-wage earners based on the recent healthcare legislation. And for many, state taxes push the combined rate above 50%. Says Golkar: "There is an old piece of tax wisdom that says, 'It's not what you earn, it's what you keep.' And that has never been more true than today."
Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Golkar has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, U.S. News & World Report, Yahoo Finance, The Fiscal Times, Bankrate, MoneyUnder30.com, MainStreet.com, InvestmentNews.com, Physician's Money Digest, and DepositAccounts.com.

VW Cheating Raises Wider Ethical Questions
Thomas Fox
FCPA and Compliance Ethics Lawyer and Author
Advanced Compliance Solutions, Houston
U.S. and international regulators are just getting started with what will be extensive investigations of Volkswagen's decision to equip millions of vehicles with technology specifically designed to cheat emissions tests in the United States and possibly elsewhere. Says Fox: "If a company had so little regard for ethical behavior that it engaged in such conduct for over six years, do you think that attitude could have bled into any other areas of business? How extensive was the unethical culture that allows such a thing to happen? How about the rules covering international bribery? VW sold only 500,000 of those 11 million diesel autos here in the U.S. Do you think the Securities and Exchange Commission might be interested in testing VW's internal controls that monitor its dealings with other countries? Could VW have engaged in other intentional conduct that may have violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act? Volkswagen should serve as a textbook case on how not to create an ethical culture."

Engineered Systems (Oracle Exadata)
Sunder Singh
Global Head, Oracle Practice
Tata Consultancy Services
The more that social becomes mainstream, the more the Internet of Things becomes embedded in daily life, the more Exadata will find a pillar position in the entire ecosystem. What's next? In-memory computing. The next big thing after that? Backup and recovery. Says Singh: "In a world where innovation moves at the speed of light, some wonder about the future of engineered systems. Do technology trends such as the cloud's ability to knit together disparate brands of hardware and software undercut the price-performance value of integrated hardware and software in an engineered system? To the contrary, I think its best days are ahead, and companies that bet against it will wind up on the wrong side of tech history. The fact is Oracle Exadata is starting a new chapter in its success, benefiting from the convergence of two industry trends -- social media and the Internet of Things."
Sunder has a unique qualification in exploring the future of engineered systems. The organization he runs as global head of Tata Consultancy Services' Oracle practice has 200+ Oracle-certified Exadata experts who daily tear apart and fine-tune these systems to meet customer business problems. To understand how a Ferrari works, you have to get down to the granular level of fuel injectors and stabilizers, so this is how he sees from the inside of Exadata about its future. Sunder will be at Oracle OpenWorld in San Francisco, Oct. 25-29.

- HOW TO BREAK INTO MAGAZINE WRITING. One of the hardest parts of becoming a freelance writer is getting your first assignment. How do you find the right magazine? And once you do, how do you get the magazine to give you an assignment: http://prn.to/1j9sw0o
- WHY PERISCOPE IS A GAME CHANGER FOR YOUR BLOG AND YOUR BRAND. With the launch of any new social media platform comes great hesitation – especially from bloggers. The thought of learning "one more" new thing for your blog can be harrowing. There's already so much to keep up with, and so, choices must be made. Periscope recently was added to the social media mix and is seeing quick adoption from online personalities looking to connect with readers authentically, and in real time. But is it really worth jumping on the bandwagon? Here's our take: http://prn.to/1Z4hGJd
- PERCENTAGE OF MINORITIES IN NEWSROOMS REMAINS STEADY. The stagnant percentage of minorities in American newsrooms proves there's a lot of work to be done not only in order to increase the numbers, but also to make substantial gains with regards to Hispanic journalists. We asked Mekahlo Medina, president of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, about the troubling situation and how the organization would address it: http://prn.to/1WIBWhx
