EXPERT ALERTS:
NASA's Discovery of Flowing Saltwater on Mars Surface
Alison Olcott-Marshall
Assistant Professor of Geology
University of Kansas
Earlier this week, NASA announced the discovery of flowing saltwater on the surface of Mars, a finding that boosts the odds that life in some form could survive on the Red Planet. Says Olcott-Marshall: "The findings of seasonal liquid briny water on Mars are incredibly important to our evolving understanding of our closest neighbor in the solar system. NASA's guiding principle has long been to 'follow the water' because all life as we know it requires water. Thus, these areas on Mars where flowing water have been observed provide natural targets in our ongoing search for life on Mars, while opening up the intriguing possibility of underground aquifers or frozen ice pools, either of which could harbor sub-surface life. Additionally, the presence of water on Mars, even if it is briny, can provide hope for in-situ resources for future astronauts to utilize. This discovery also demonstrates how coherent NASA's Mars characterization strategy has been, as the findings of perchlorates reported today have been supported by and are consistent with those of previous missions, including Mars Science Laboratory, Phoenix, and even Viking, back in the '70s."
Olcott-Marshall studies the geology, chemistry and preserved biology of Mars analogs here on Earth, the better to constrain, limit and understand how to search for life on Mars. She also currently is teaching a First Year Seminar on the history of our exploration of Mars, from the very first telescope observations to NASA's current and future missions.

Building Human Habitats on Mars
Ondrej Doule
Assistant Professor, Human-Centered Design and Aerospace Engineering
Florida Institute of Technology
"The first Mars base will be a pre-fabricated and possibly self-constructing machine that will land, deploy and initiate autonomously on the Martian surface before the first crew arrives. The base will provide atmosphere regeneration, food supply and radiation protection. The form of the habitats will range from fully rigid cylindrical shapes outfitted with additional modules, to more complex forms that will include inflatable and self-deployable parts."
Dr. Doule is an internationally renowned expert in his field. He obtained his Ph.D. in Architecture in Extreme Environments from the Czech Technical University Faculty of Architecture in 2010; his Master of Science in Space Management, from the International Space University in 2008; and his Master in Architecture and Urban Planning from the Czech Technical University Faculty of Architecture in 2006. He is chair of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Space Architecture Technical Committee. He also founded and co-designed the Self-Deployable Habitat for Extreme Environments for both space and earth applications, a project funded by Europe's Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development. During his doctoral research, he performed his internship at NASA Ames Research Center focusing on Martian Base architecture. His concept design of a suborbital spacecraft interior Silverbird won an Arthur C. Clarke Foundation prize for a unique contribution to the safety of human spaceflight. He also led teams of scientists and specialists as commander during two missions at the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah. He can speak about the skills and personality traits needed to lead Martian astronauts, the challenges of building on Mars, and the technology needed to survive on the planet.

How Donald Trump Can Fail to Win the GOP Presidential Nomination
Jeffrey Pfeffer
Thomas D. Dee II Professor of Organizational Behavior
Stanford Graduate School of Business
"A campaign is like a startup organization that, in the end, requires more than a vision and marketing -- it also needs execution and mostly operational infrastructure to translate brand-building and marketing into votes (just as companies need operations to translate consumer interest into real sales)."
Pfeffer's new book, "Leadership B.S.," offers insight and anecdotes on Trump and some of America's other best-known business leaders. His latest Fortune column poses the question of whether Trump and his persona is up to the task (http://fortune.com/2015/09/01/donald-trump-bubble/).

Police Misconduct
Antonio Romanucci
Principal and Partner
Romanucci & Blandin, LLC
"Even with police misconduct being publicly scrutinized for years, it is sadly a major issue citizens have to contend with when interacting with police, for even the most mundane offenses. And so long as government officials continue to ratify the type of unlawful physical abuse administered by deputies onto its citizens, the community will be at risk of harm by the very people who have taken an oath to protect them."
Romanucci can discuss any topics surrounding police misconduct. This year, he appeared on CLTV's "Politics Tonight" to discuss the stop-and-frisk class action lawsuit filed against the City of Chicago and Chicago Police Department. Martindale-Hubbell has awarded him its AV-Preenent rating every year since 2005. He has also been named a Best Lawyer in Chicago and a Top 100 Trial Lawyer by The National Trial Lawyers. His vast experience has earned him the admiration of his colleagues who have supported his rise to leadership positions, such as his recent appointment as the chair of the Police Misconduct Litigation Group and vice-chair of the Traumatic Brain Injury Litigation Group for the American Association for Justice (AAJ), the world's largest trial bar.
