EXPERT ALERTS:
Enhancing the Food Recall Process
Angela Fernandez
Vice President of Retail Grocery and Foodservice
GS1 US
"Regulators and consumers alike are demanding more vigilance and transparency from the food industry. By deciding on a common approach to uniquely identifying and tracking products as they move throughout the food supply chain, manufacturers, distributors, retailers, restaurants and solution providers are moving toward a safer food supply chain."
Fernandez is vice president of retail grocery and foodservices for GS1 US, a member of the global information standards organization that brings industry communities together to solve supply-chain problems through the adoption and implementation of GS1 Standards. Nearly 300,000 businesses in 25 industries rely on GS1 US for trading-partner collaboration and for maximizing the cost effectiveness, speed, visibility, security and sustainability of their business processes. Fernandez leads two GS1 US initiatives -- the Retail Grocery Initiative and the Foodservice GS1 US Standards Initiative. On a daily basis, she collaborates with industry leaders and key trade associations to understand industry supply chain challenges and address how the use of GS1 Standards can help solve for those challenges. Currently, Fernandez is engaged in promoting the business benefits GS1 Standards can offer the food industry, including improved product traceability and food safety. She is available to discuss food traceability and how it relates to enhancing the food recall process and ensuring better accuracy with pinpointing affected food product.

Court Clears Hurdles for Arbitration Agreements
David M. Walsh IV
Appellate Health Care Attorney
Chamblee, Ryan, Kershaw & Anderson, P.C. in Dallas
The recent ruling by the Supreme Court of Texas that patients can be more easily compelled to sign arbitration agreements before they get medical care likely will have a significant effect on Lone Star State health care providers seeking to control litigation costs. Says Walsh: "This ruling may especially be relevant to nursing home operators and long-term care providers because most cases against these facilities do not typically include a claim for economic damages. And, under Texas law, noneconomic damages against a facility are capped at $250,000. As a result, many plaintiffs may now view taking a claim against a nursing home into arbitration as being cost-prohibitive, as they will have to share not only in the cost of the proceeding, but also pay all legal fees out of the limited recovery."

Why Gluten and Lactose May Not be the Problem
Chef Andrew Dole
Culinary Instructor and Registered Dietician/Nutritionist
The Art Institute of Colorado
"FODMAP represents a group of natural sugars found in fruits, vegetables, milk and some grains. These sugars are fermented very quickly in the intestines and are poorly absorbed. This is the direct cause of many uncomfortable symptoms experienced by up to 27% in the Western world, including bloating, gas, distended stomach, abdominal pain, diarrhea and irregular bowel function. Many blame these symptoms on the usual suspects, lactose, gluten or food allergies. In fact, gluten and dairy are a very small category on the high FODMAP foods."
Chef Dole is a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist and culinary instructor at The Art Institute of Colorado. He is also the owner of Body Fuel SPN, a variety of nutrition and cooking services tailored to support clients with their nutritional goals. He can speak to FODMAPs, along with what the FODMAP diet is and how to make it work for you. He can also speak to a variety of nutrition-based topics, including nutrition for athletes, natural pain and inflammation remedies, recovery nutrition for muscle injury, nutrition for a longer life and childhood nutrition, amongst others.

Being Overweight is a Disease of Thinking
Lyssa Weiss
Nutritionist/Weight Management Specialist
The Skinny Jeans Diet
"For most dieters, weight isn't really the problem. It's a symptom of being out of control with food. Losing a few pounds doesn't mean you've lost the problem, as the failure of most dieters proves. Fundamentally, overweight is a disease of thinking."
Weiss can share strategies, tips, recipes, meal plans, shopping lists, and emotional support needed to achieve a lasting weight loss.

Same-Sex Couples Soon Eligible for FMLA
Amber Liddell Alwais
Family Law Attorney
Orsinger, Nelson, Downing & Anderson, L.L.P. in San Antonio
Although there will be states, including Texas, to challenge the change, beginning March 27, all U.S. couples in legally recognized same-sex marriages will be entitled to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for childbirth, serious illness or to care for seriously ill immediate family under the U.S. Department of Labor's Family and Medical Leave Act. Previously, FMLA benefits only applied to same-sex couples if the state they lived in recognized their marriage. Says Liddell Alwais: "This is a quickly evolving area of the law that impacts several areas, from employee benefits to family law. But in challenging the right for same-sex couples to marry, Texas is setting itself up for a scenario similar to what was seen in Loving v. Virginia. In that case, the U.S. Supreme Court was clear that this country would not support discrimination by individual states or the federal government against the fundamental right to marry. Contesting that premise that interracial couples should be allowed to marry was a permanent stain in Virginia's history. It seems Texas is headed down the same path."

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month
Sara O'Meara
Co-Founder and CEO
Childhelp
"Even now, in the U.S., child abuse is still being swept under the rug, despite the fact that five children die every day from abuse and neglect -- and that is five too many. A report of child abuse is made every 10 seconds, and nearly 3.3 million reports of child abuse are made annually. We must do something to lower this statistic."
O'Meara is the co-founder of Childhelp, the nation's oldest and largest nonprofit advocating for abused and neglected children. Childhelp has brought the light of hope and healing into the lives of countless children and continues to do so every day, especially during April, which is Childhelp National Child Abuse Prevention Month. O'Meara is based in Phoenix.

Are Your Texting Habits to Blame for Your Crummy Love Life?
Ashley Papa
Contributor
FOX News Magazine
"In a recent survey by Match.com, men and women revealed their biggest texting turnoffs when it came to dating. Men said their top three pet peeves were as follows: typos and improper grammar; responding with short or one-word answers; and getting texted at work. Women hate when men: have too many typos and bad grammar; ask too many personal questions; and respond with short answers. And both sexes hate when a potential partner uses ALL CAPS."
Papa is a relationship reporter covering it all: sex, love, dating, marriage and more. She has been featured in various radio and TV interviews all over the U.S.
