This latest contract is in addition to the $2.4 million contract that Pepco Energy began implementing in 2010. Based on the successful partnership initiated by the first phase contract, the school system chose to continue working with Pepco Energy by expanding the project to include additional energy infrastructure improvements.
"The professionalism and quality of work that Pepco Energy brought to the first phase of our energy infrastructure improvements was outstanding," said Randy Dasher, Director of Facilities Services for Prince William County Schools. "In choosing a partner for this latest phase, we have a proven partner in Pepco Energy."
The expansion of the project will allow Pepco Energy to help the county's public schools further reduce energy consumption and costs by implementing energy conservation measures in two additional school facilities. Pepco Energy will retrofit and replace lighting and water fixtures, as well as install more energy-efficient boilers, variable frequency drives and domestic hot water systems.
The total project will increase the energy savings to approximately $3.6 million over the 10-year term, as well as reduce energy and water use by approximately 24 percent and 30 percent, respectively.
"Pepco Energy is pleased to work with Prince William County Schools once again," said John Huffman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Pepco Energy. "This additional project phase demonstrates the schools system's continued dedication to energy efficiency and a greener environment for its students and employees."
The first phase of the project reduced carbon dioxide emissions by the Prince William County Schools by approximately 1,200 metric tons annually, and the second phase will increase the reductions of emissions for the school system to nearly 3,200 metric tons per year.
Construction began in January and is scheduled to be complete in October 2011.
