ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Aug. 17, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- With audiences rapidly shifting to smartphones and tablets to consume news, The Poynter Institute, a global leader in journalism, announced it will hold a Mobile News Summit (#mobilenews15) at Columbia Graduate School of Journalism in New York City on Sept. 13th and 14th. The summit is being presented by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
The event, which also is being sponsored by Facebook, Twitter and the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, will gather up to 100 news executives, journalists, technologists and academics engaged in mobile journalism and storytelling. Industry leaders from The New York Times, ProPublica, The Associated Press, The Guardian, Fusion, AJ+ and BuzzFeed News will be among the speakers.
The event kicks off with an evening reception at Twitter's New York headquarters on Sept. 13th. The day-long summit takes place on Sept. 14th at the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. Sessions will focus on:
-Leading a mobile-first newsroom
-How to effectively deliver news to a mobile audience
-Mobile's rapid growth and what it means for storytelling
-Monetizing mobile
-Building a news apps team
-Live streaming: the ethics and implications for newsrooms
"Experts say this will be the first year in which a majority of digital news is consumed on a mobile device, and this rapid and seismic shift has huge implications for the media industry and journalists," said Tim Franklin, Poynter's President. "This summit brings together some of the top minds from the industry and the academy to explore the opportunities and challenges this trend represents for the media business and citizens in our self-governed democracy."

Participation is by invitation only and will be at no cost to invitees. A limited number of journalists also will be invited to apply to attend the summit.
