Postgres Community Responds to EU Decision to Approve Oracle's Acquisition of MySQL
EU regulators cite PostgreSQL as 'credible alternative' to MySQL
WESTFORD, Mass., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- EnterpriseDB, the enterprise Postgres company, and PostgreSQL co-founder Bruce Momjian today issued the following statements regarding the EU committee's decision to approve Oracle's acquisition of Sun, which includes ownership of the MySQL open source database project.
As part of the official decision, the European Commission ruled that according to its investigation, many database users consider PostgreSQL to be a "credible alternative" to MySQL. Many leaders of the PostgreSQL community and the leading commercial backer of PostgreSQL, EnterpriseDB, agree that PostgreSQL is a "credible alternative" to MySQL, but wanted to clarify and build upon this statement.
"This decision simply further supports the fact that Postgres is the only real choice for organizations looking to deploy an open source database that is backed by a truly independent community," said Ed Boyajian, president and CEO of EnterpriseDB, the enterprise Postgres company. "For the last several months we've seen a steady stream of MySQL users looking to us for migration tools to Postgres and we expect that trend to continue and even accelerate now that the EU has made its decision."
"The approval of Oracle's acquisition of Sun is not surprising. What is surprising is that after months of deliberation, the European Commission never fully understood the competitive issues surrounding MySQL," said Bruce Momjian, co-founder and core team member of the PostgreSQL Global Development Team and senior database architect at EntepriseDB. "PostgreSQL can handle any of the lightweight processing that MySQL was designed for, but in reality PostgreSQL is a full-featured open source database built for high-transaction, highly scalable enterprise applications."
Momjian continued, "MySQL was built by developers for quick and dirty applications with simple scripting languages, but it's not ready for true enterprise IT developers. PostgreSQL on the other hand was designed to address the needs of IT applications requiring a full featured RDBMS."
