PLCB Honors Winning Student Artists in Alcohol Education Poster Contest
Winning Designs on Display in State Capitol
HARRISBURG, Pa., April 25, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board today honored 50 elementary and secondary students from across the state who successfully illustrated the dangers of underage drinking for the agency's 20th annual Alcohol Education Poster Contest.
"We want to congratulate those students who used their creativity and artistic talent to send a strong message about the dangers of underage drinking and the healthy alternatives," said Joseph E. Brion, chairman of the Liquor Control Board. "While alcohol use among teens unfortunately continues to be prevalent, we encourage parents and caregivers to use Alcohol Awareness Month and this contest to start a discussion about the consequences of drinking before the age of 21."
More than 500 students from 53 counties participated in this year's contest. While students were given great latitude in their designs, participants were judged on overall presentation and messaging. Some used clever phrases such as "Don't Waste Time Getting Wasted" or "There's No U in Alcohol", while others artfully focused on the choice many young people will face when it comes to leisure time.
The winning posters will be displayed at the Capitol in Harrisburg through April 27. The PLCB will use the artwork to create posters, bookmarks and coloring sheets to share with students throughout the state. Students who created the winning entries will receive a certificate signed by Governor Tom Corbett.
Since the poster contest began in 1992, tens of thousands of student entries have been submitted, and thousands more have participated through projects in their classrooms.
The PLCB was joined at today's awards ceremony by representatives of the Department of Health, PennDOT, and Communities in Schools of Pennsylvania.
