"Everybody chooses different paths in the cancer realm," said director/producer Alan M. Blassberg. "No two journey's are the same." The documentary takes a profound look into the BRCA world examining what it is and how this gene mutation puts both women AND men at risk for developing numerous cancers. Blassberg tells the story of how hereditary cancer has ripped his family apart and what he must face as a BRCA 2 positive male.
The film highlights the message that men are equally as likely to carry a BRCA gene mutation and this lack of information is deadly. Blassberg is seen getting a mammogram and several male breast cancer survivors appear in the film.
He says, "Most men don't realize that breast cancer is not just a woman's disease. In fact, a higher percentage of men die from breast cancer because they are unaware and don't undergo genetic testing--so male breast cancer is often found at a later stage. Throughout the film we capture what men with breast cancer and the BRCA gene mutation deal with in such a pink world."
Dr. Kristi Funk, M.D, co-founder of Pink Lotus Breast Center, and Angelina Jolie's breast surgeon, speaks passionately about the need for awareness and prevention. The film also includes additional pre-eminent specialists on hereditary cancer including Dr. Armando Giuliano and Dr. Susan Domchek.
Angelina Jolie put the term B-R-C-A and prophylactic (preventative) surgeries on the map with her initial op-ed piece in the New York Times back in 2013. This film will define what carrying a BRCA mutation means.
"Decisions surrounding cancer risk are deeply personal and what is right for one person may not be right for another. The film provides education and knowledge to empower someone to make their own best healthcare decisions," said Amy Byer Shainman, Hereditary Cancer/BRCA Advocate & Executive Producer.
The AMC Empire Theater is located at 234 W 42nd St, New York, New York.
