Philadelphia Navy League Adopts Missile Destroyer
PHILADELPHIA, March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The Philadelphia Council will adopt the guided missile Aegis destroyer USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG108) at an official ceremony on March 25, 2010 at the Hyatt at Penn's Landing.
USS Wayne E. Meyer, commanded by CO Nick Sarap, was commissioned in Philadelphia on October 10th, 2009 before a crowd of over 5,000 guests including the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff ADM Mike Mullen and Chief of Naval Operations ADM Gary Roughead, who both participated in this historic commissioning event.
On March 25th, the ship will be officially adopted by the Philadelphia Council of the Navy League and an adoption certificate will be presented to Ship's Sponsor Anna Mae (Mrs. Wayne E.) Meyer by the Council's President and members of the Board. The first contribution to the ship's Morale Welfare and Recreation Fund will also be presented to the Ship's Sponsor.
The financial support for this relationship comes in part from a memorial fund that was established by the family of RADM Wayne E. Meyer, who died in 2009, one month before his namesake ship was commissioned.
Future efforts in support of the USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108) by the Philadelphia Council include providing ongoing financial support that will benefit current and future officers and crews for the duration of the ship's service to her country.
