People's United employees donated over $57,800 to the Haitian Health Foundation, a humanitarian organization committed to helping the poorest families in Haiti. The organization focuses on improving the health and well-being of the poor and sick. In addition, the People's United Community Foundation committed to match employee contributions dollar for dollar with a donation to the Haitian relief efforts of the American Red Cross.
People's United Bank's President and CEO Philip Sherringham sent a message to employees in Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine and New York shortly after the earthquake asking for their support. "People's United employees have a long and deep tradition of generosity in helping those in need," Sherringham noted in his email. "Now is the time to call on this tradition to aid the people of Haiti who are in such desperate need of help."
The Haitian Health Foundation was founded and has been run for the past 25 years by People's United board member, Dr. Jeremiah Lowney. The organization prides itself on the fact that 93 percent of all donations go directly to helping the people of Haiti.
In announcing the $115,000 contribution, Sherringham noted: "Though media coverage of the disaster in Haiti decreases weekly, the need for support will go on for years as the country recovers and rebuilds. I am pleased to see that once again our employees have stepped up to the plate to help those truly in need."
