Pennsylvania's Employment Situation: August 2011
HARRISBURG, Pa., Sept. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 8.2 percent in August, up from 7.8 percent in July. Pennsylvania's unemployment rate was below the U.S. rate of 9.1 percent in August, and has been below the U.S. rate for 40 consecutive months, and at or below the U.S. rate for 58 consecutive months.
Pennsylvania's August unemployment rate was down 0.4 percentage points from August 2010.
Pennsylvania's seasonally adjusted civilian labor force – the number of people working or looking for work – was up 6,000 in August to 6,309,000. Resident employment fell by 16,000 to 5,792,000 while the number of unemployed residents rose 22,000 to 516,000. Pennsylvania's labor force was 13,000 below its August 2010 level.
Seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs in Pennsylvania were up 1,500 in August to 5,683,600. Among Pennsylvania's 11 supersectors, Professional & Business Services showed the biggest volume increase in August (up 3,100), with employment services showing noticeable growth. Manufacturing added 2,200 jobs, with both durable and non-durable goods makers contributing. Financial Activities and Trade, Transportation & Utilities each added over 1,000 jobs in August. The biggest decline in August occurred in Information (down 3,500).
Pennsylvania's nonfarm job count was up 56,600 (1.0 percent) from August 2010; nationally nonfarm jobs were up 1.26 million (1.0 percent) from last August.
