Pennsylvania Governor Rendell: Interstates 81, 83, PA 581 are Now Open
Interstate 78 Remains Closed in Both Directions
HARRISBURG, Pa., Feb. 11 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Interstates 81, 83 and PA 581 have reopened, Governor Edward G. Rendell said. Interstate 78 remains closed in both directions.
The Governor said that other interstates that were closed earlier today remain closed, including the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76), I-476, I-176, and I-676.
"While the snow has largely stopped falling, increasing winds are causing whiteout conditions in many areas of the state," Governor Rendell said. "Although some interstates have reopened, I strongly urge motorists to stay home. Decreased visibility from the drifting snow, combined with nighttime darkness, makes for very dangerous driving conditions."
A 45 mph speed limit remains in effect on the reopened interstates. Also, the restrictions previously imposed for certain vehicles on these interstates remain in effect.
It is important that people only call 911 in an emergency. Do not call for any other reason.
The Governor said PennDOT crews are continuing to treat roadways, and interstates remaining closed are being kept passable for emergency crews only. The agency will continue to treat roadways throughout the storm until precipitation stops and roads are clear.
