Pelosi Statement in Honor of Memorial Day
WASHINGTON, May 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in honor of Memorial Day, which will be celebrated on Monday, May 31:
"On Memorial Day, we honor all of the men and women who have served our nation in battle – and continue to serve today. From the beaches of Normandy to the mountains of Afghanistan, they have fought on behalf of our safety and security. In every war and on every front, they have laid their lives on the line in the name of our freedom, values, and future.
"In this Congress, we treat each day as Memorial Day – recognizing the sacrifice of the bravest among us; honoring the service of those who wear our uniform; paying our respects to those who perished at war and celebrating the achievements, actions, and courage of those who returned safely home.
"Through our actions and our votes, the New Direction Congress upholds our commitment: that just as our military pledges to leave no one behind on the battlefield, we will leave no veteran behind when they come home. Building on our record, in just the last few months, we've provided assistance to caregivers, boosted services for women veterans, and protected health coverage for our service members. Today, we voted to give our troops a pay raise and strengthen support for soldiers whose deployment takes them away from their families.
"Earlier this month, I led a congressional delegation to Qatar, Afghanistan, and Germany to visit our soldiers and our wounded warriors, and to celebrate Mothers' Day with our women in uniform. These service members are performing admirably and magnificently far from home. And on this Memorial Day – and every day – our thoughts and prayers remain with those still in harm's way."
