ParkerVision's Patent Portfolio Leads Telecom Sector
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., March 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- With 211 domestic and international patents in its portfolio, ParkerVision, Inc. (Nasdaq: PRKR), leads the wireless sector in three broad categories measuring the value and impact of intellectual property, according to a new analysis from The Patent Board that appeared in the March 18, 2013 edition of The Wall Street Journal.
ParkerVision ranked first in three of the six criteria used by The Patent Board to objectively analyze the influence of current patent portfolios maintained by wireless and telecom sector companies.
The Patent Board's most recent "Patent Scorecard" ranked ParkerVision number one in "Research Intensity," "Science Strength" and "Industry Impact." The rankings, which are released by The Patent Board three times annually, position ParkerVision alongside such industry leaders as Qualcomm, Cisco, Motorola, Samsung, Nokia, Research In Motion, LG Electronics, Ericsson and others. ParkerVision, which was awarded 23 new domestic and international patents in 2012, has ranked first in two or more of The Patent Board's criteria for the last six reporting periods. In the current report, ParkerVision was also ranked first in "Science Strength" as analyzed by The Patent Board over a cumulative five-year period.
"ParkerVision's portfolio is one of the finest we have ever evaluated at 3LP and during my 30 year career," said Kevin Rivette, managing partner of 3LP Advisors, a leading intellectual property advisory firm, and former V.P. of Intellectual Property Strategy at IBM. "In addition to the fundamental nature of the innovation, the crafting of this portfolio to have such breadth and depth of coverage is impressive and speaks to why it consistently makes the Patent Scorecard list," he added.
Founded in 1968 as a patent analytics and research institution, The Patent Board is the leading independent provider of best practices research, tools and metrics for patent analysis and intellectual property investment. The Patent Board tracks and analyzes innovation, movement, and the business value of patent assets across every industry on a global basis. The Patent Scorecard is a periodic assessment of patent activity and is primarily ranked by a combined measure of the quality and quantity of a company's patent portfolio. The Patent Board has developed more than 50 indicators that track global patent activity relating to companies' innovation, technology, and science strengths.
According to The Patent Board's criteria, Science Strength is a measure of the degree to which a company's patents are referenced in trade journal and scholarly articles. Industry Impact is determined based on the influence that a company's patents have on the broader industry. Research Intensity is an aggregate measure of the degree to which a company's technology is building on core science.
"From ParkerVision's inception, we have continuously sought new ways to approach technological problems through innovation and the development of novel yet practical solutions. The significant influence of the technologies we have pioneered for wireless communication is evident in the patent portfolio that we have built and continue to maintain," said ParkerVision Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Parker. "We believe our technology is responsible for important breakthroughs in the way mobile devices are used, and we expect our continued innovations will result in ongoing expansion of our intellectual property portfolio."
