PA Governor Corbett Announces Winners of School Fitness Centers Contest

HARRISBURG, Pa., May 8, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Governor Tom Corbett today announced that three Pennsylvania schools have been chosen as a National Champion School by the National Foundation for Governors' Fitness Councils. The schools will receive new, state-of-the-art, Live Positively™ fitness centers at no cost to the schools or taxpayers.

The Pennsylvania winners of the National Champion School Campaign are:

• Owatin Creek Elementary School, Reading
• Troy Intermediate School, Troy
• South Allegheny Middle School, McKeesport

Each school was chosen by the National Foundation for Governors' Fitness Councils for their dedication to physical fitness and the wellness of the student body. Speaking at Owatin Creek Elementary School in Exeter Township, Governor Corbett praised the students and faculty for their commitment to participating in healthy activities.

"Living healthy today will make a huge difference for these children tomorrow," said Corbett. "I applaud the students for taking their health and fitness seriously and the school for encouraging good habits to last a lifetime."

Governor Corbett was joined by National Foundation Chairman Jake Steinfeld, founder of the "Body by Jake" fitness programs. The organization is committed to the advancement of youth fitness. It also strives to reduce a number of health problems affecting our youth, including high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity.

"The winning Pennsylvania schools are among the first in the nation to be awarded brand new Live Positively Fitness Centers for their tremendous efforts in physical fitness innovation," said Jake Steinfeld. "I've always believed that academics and fitness go hand in hand.  Not only will these students be healthier, but they'll also have increased confidence, improved self-esteem and will achieve greater academic success."

The fitness centers will be built over the summer and ready to use when students return in the fall. They were paid for by the National Foundation through public private partnerships. The gyms will include strength training equipment, cardio fitness equipment and interactive exercise games.
