OY! iOS App launches philanthropic "Misery Loves Community" movement
- Enables individuals to share a "kvetch" with friends or public, but then encourages someone to act by contributing to a nonprofit -
SAN DIEGO, Dec. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- OY!, the first iOS app that enables people to vent life's frustrations for charity, is available on the Apple Store for download in the BETA version.
The app is designed for sharing a sentiment in a fun, friendly, comical way and encapsulate the shared sense of frustration and exasperation with world news or just the events of the day.
OY! also empowers individuals to take action by donating to one or more of three nonprofits - The Rosie Network, Girl Scouts and Voices for Children. More information on OY! is at www.gettheoyapp.com or by viewing a video at youtube.com/c/gettheoyapp
"The intent behind this adventure is to create a messaging app - unlike Instagram, Pinterest, Yikyak, etc., that energizes a community, not just sends a goofy message about what you ate at dinner last night," said Co-Founder and OY!-in-Chief Neil Senturia. "OY! understands that commiserating is a way to vent and lament but also to bond with others. OY! is a feeling, a word, a sound and a moment to which everyone can relate."
Senturia continued, "In the days of the Pharaoh, when the misery index rose above any normal level of tolerance, the Jews gave a collective sigh and then soldiered on. After all, someone had to build the pyramids. That sigh was OY! and it was as much a cry of common ground as it was a cry of lament. Today it seems the misery index is rising again, and with it the discontent. But the cry was buried in the sand 5,000 years ago, lost for centuries and leaving us without that familiar, common cry with which to rally our communities. Fortunately, it was recently unearthed with our app."
Carl Reiner, world famous comedian, writer, producer, director and actor, is signed on to be the first voice of the app.
"OY! is resurrected in the form of a new app because we need a way to express to our friends, neighbors, acquaintances, political figures and anyone that we are sick and tired of that we're not going to take it anymore," said Co-Founder and Second-in-OY! Cliff Boro. "We need to harness the dismay and turn it into humor, common ground and ultimately into charitable giving. So we have provided a way to express a collective lament, a cry of disbelief tinged with anger, annoyance, frustration and fury. We need to vent and lament and we need our world to hear us. And then we need to get to work. We created this app because Misery Loves Community!"
