Overcoming Odds: A Lebanese-American Physician's Story
Experienced Author and Doctor Shares Journey of Education and Success in Inspiring Autobiography
CARLSBAD, Calif., Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- In his new inspiring autobiography "Call Me Del: Dogged in the Pursuit of Excellence" (published by Trafford Publishing), experienced author and accomplished doctor Adel A. Yunis finally shares his arduous journey of education and success, starting from his rural days as a poor, young farmer in a remote village and ending with the realization of his career as a renowned physician-scientist.
Yunis's experience as a physician-scientist and academician and his views about the standards of excellence of medical schools and/or centers serve as a guideline for those who intend to pursue a career in academic medicine. As he himself has stated about his profession, "Our mission as physician-scientists is to constantly generate new knowledge through research for the betterment of the quality of human life and to reproduce ourselves, always creating new generations of physician-scientists to carry the torch. It is this noble mission, and its execution distinguishes great medical schools from the average ones."
Determined to help patients and academicians, Yunis has devoted himself to education and educational centers so that others may avoid the pitfalls that threaten their goals. As Dr. William Peck, former vice-chancellor for medical affairs at Washington University, wrote of "Call Me Del," "In my view, it should be required reading for anyone who aspires to and is in a leadership position in academic medicine."
Revisit Yunis's struggles balancing his schoolwork in northern Lebanon as his father relocates to the west coast of Africa for 11 years to finance his education. Follow Yunis as he puts himself through school and continues his scientific research, moving from a great institution to a young medical school promising a wealth of challenges and the potential for academic excellence, finally fulfilling his own father's dream.
