BALTIMORE, Dec. 17, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Baltimore-based OrderUp, focused on building out food delivery marketplaces outside of the top metros, today announced the hire of former AOL Senior Vice President of Corporate Development, Michael Smith, as Vice President of Corporate and Business Development. OrderUp's order and delivery volume has escalated in the second half of 2014; the company has seen an increase from 10,000 weekly orders to 20,000 weekly orders that its driver partners fulfill, which is a portion of its total weekly transaction volume.
At OrderUp, Smith oversees corporate and business development, franchise operations and is charged with finding growth opportunities as the company seeks to scale quickly in secondary and tertiary markets. His experience includes the negotiations of the acquisitions of TechCrunch and Huffington Post while at AOL.
"Mike brings significant corporate development and M&A experience to OrderUp," said Chris Jeffery, CEO and co-founder of OrderUp. "This is a highly valued area to us as we look to scale quickly through local opportunities."
Since his hire, Smith has overseen an acquisition of Columbia, Missouri-based My Dinner Taxi through OrderUp's local affiliate. The transaction expands OrderUp's rapidly growing network of restaurants for which it provides discovery, online ordering, and delivery. My Dinner Taxi's team will join the OrderUp Columbia team and bring more than 30 new restaurants
In August, OrderUp secured $9 million in Series A venture funding led by Steve Case's D.C.-based investment firm Revolution Ventures, former LivingSocial CEO Tim O'Shaughnessy, and Five Elms Capital to enable OrderUp's rapid growth.
