CAMBRIDGE, Mass., July 20, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- OpenNebula 5.4, code-named "Medusa", is the third release of the OpenNebula 5 series. Almost every component of OpenNebula has been reviewed to target usability and functional improvements driven by the needs of its thousands of users that include industry leaders like BlackBerry, Unity, Akamai, Runtastic, Telefonica, CA Technologies, Hitachi Data Services, Santander Bank, and Fuze, and research and supercomputing centers like Harvard University, FermiLab, European Space Agency and SURFsara. As an enterprise-class product, OpenNebula offers an upgrade path to get to the most current version.
OpenNebula 5.4 takes a giant leap forward in VMware support, bringing it up to speed with KVM management. New features include enhanced network and storage management, support for linked clones, disk resizing, save-as template functionality for VMware VMs, disk save-as functionality, automatic storage scheduling, storage quotas and many more. This enables the use of vCenter with functionality only available through VMware license add-ons.
Medusa additionally brings a native implementation of the Raft consensus algorithm that enables the High Availability deployment of the OpenNebula front-end without relying to third party components. This new functionality of distributed system state is also used to federate multiple OpenNebula zones. There are many other improvements in 5.4 like VM-VM and VM-Host affinity/anti-affinity rules, improved VM lifecycle, flexible resource permissions, live disk resizing, improved Ceph support, enhanced disk I/O feedback, showback cost estimate in Sunstone, flexible IPv6 definition, and http proxy support for marketplace.
After the successful fifth edition of OpenNebulaConf in Boston with keynote speakers from Harvard, Akamai and Telefonica, the sixth edition of the OpenNebula community event will be held in Madrid on 22-23 October 2017 with keynote speakers from Trivago, BlackBerry and Runtastic. The event will feature presentations from a wide range of OpenNebula users, representing telcos, enterprises, government, and research. OpenNebula Conferences serve as a meeting point for cloud users, developers, administrators, integrators and researchers.
