OnlyBoth Launches New Discovery-&-Writing Technology and Website
Interactive Website of U.S. Colleges Discovers New Insights and Writes them Up in Perfect English
PITTSBURGH, May 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- OnlyBoth.com launched today a novel technology that discovers new insights in data and writes them up in perfect English, all automated, and unlike predecessors that do discovery or writing, but not both. The company also launched an interactive web application that reveals how individual colleges are unique or surprising, and how they compare to peer institutions.
The inaugural OnlyBoth application analyzes data on 3,122 U.S. colleges and universities described by 190 attributes. Users enter a college and get back a well-written sentence or paragraph that says what's special about a college - good, bad, or ambivalent. The source data combine academic measures with rankings, geography, sports, and fun attributes. The tens of thousands of concise, grammatical sentences reflect complicated comparisons that people can't easily do or think of.
OnlyBoth does the reverse of IBM's Watson and other ambitious text-mining projects, which read articles and compile databases of relations and properties. Instead, OnlyBoth goes from properties to human-quality paragraphs.
CEO Raul Valdes-Perez explained that the company's technology "is like a robot research assistant; it discovers and writes up. Only OnlyBoth does both, to an unprecedented sophistication. Higher Education transparency is well served by our first application, liberating the tremendous insights cloaked in big data."
This artificial intelligence technology was first developed in the late 90s at Carnegie Mellon University under a National Science Foundation grant, but then set aside while Valdes-Perez co-founded and served Vivisimo (later acquired by IBM) as CEO and chairman.
OnlyBoth's technology applies to any structured data where learning the distinctive qualities of individual entries matters, such as sports, investing, genetics, and even politics. Data journalism can be especially impacted.
