OMG and Wireless Innovation Forum to Offer Mutual Membership Discounts; Increase Level of Cooperation
Groups also plan to develop joint whitepaper
NEEDHAM, Mass. and WASHINGTON, March 31 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Leaders of computer industry standards organization OMG™ and reconfigurable radio technologies industry association The Wireless Innovation Forum met recently at a joint meeting of the Wireless Innovation Forum and JTRS JPEO to discuss ways they can better serve the members of both organizations. Key outputs resulting from this meeting include a plan to develop a whitepaper highlighting the process followed and success achieved in the joint development of the "PIM and PSM for Smart Antenna" specification, and discounts on first-year membership for members of each organization to join the other to simplify and support collaborative development in the future.

Software defined radio technology has matured, with applicability growing to address a wide range of application areas including automotive, public safety, global tracking, consumer electronics and cellular network infrastructure, in addition to the military applications that gave the field its start. Previously, members of the OMG and Wireless Innovation Forum collaborated in support of these markets to create the first-ever software-based communications specification to support smart antennas. The "PIM and PSM for Smart Antenna" specification is comprised of three major components:
- The Unified Modeling Language™ (UML®) Profile for Smart Antenna (SA), which defines a language for modeling a smart antenna system by expanding the UML language;
- The SA Platform Independent Model (PIM), which provides a set of interfaces for interfacing with the signal processing module, RF module, and controller module; and
- The SA Platform Specific Model (PSM), which provides a rule for transforming the elements of the profile and SA PIM into the platform specific model for Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA®) interface definition language and XML.

A key offering in this catalog relevant to the software radio community is the PIM and PSM for Software Radio Components (PPSRC). Originally based on the U.S. Military's Software Communications Architecture (SCA), the PPSRC can be used to design SCA-compliant configurations, and is flexible enough to allow lighter-weight designs at various conformance levels. The PPSRC and specifications built on it will support, for example, implementations on a FPGA, DSP, or ASIC. This opens the door to widespread use in the commercial world as well as military and crisis-response settings.
