OCHIN/O-HITEC, Oregon's Health Information Technology Regional Extension Center, to Provide Allscripts Electronic Health Record and Practice Management to Oregon Physicians
St. Charles Health System first to sign on and receive O-HITEC support to qualify for federal stimulus funding
PORTLAND, Ore. and CHICAGO, Jan. 25, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- OCHIN, one of the nation's most innovative non-profit providers of health information technology (HIT) and services to community based clinics (CHC) serving the medically underserved, will reach out to private providers through a partnership with Allscripts (Nasdaq: MDRX), the leading provider of technologies essential to creating a connected community of health.
Today, OCHIN announced that it would immediately begin reselling the Allscripts Electronic Health Record and Practice Management solution to Oregon physicians. In 2010, the federal government named OCHIN to develop Oregon's Health Information Technology Extension Center (O-HITEC). O-HITEC is responsible for helping more than 3,000 Oregon primary care providers install certified Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems and meaningfully use them to improve the quality and reduce the cost of patient services.
Abigail Sears, OCHIN's Chief Executive Officer, commented, "Our partnership with Allscripts will enable us to expand our reach and provide even greater support to primary care providers in small practices serving Medicare and Medicaid patients in our targeted markets." OCHIN will continue to support its collaborative network of community clinics that started in Oregon over a decade ago and today is in seven states. "Continuing our commitment to serve the underserved, we will help small independent physician practices avoid the headaches of on-premise software by implementing the Allscripts solution, hosting it over the Internet, and providing excellent first-level support," said Sears.
The OCHIN/O-HITEC and Allscripts partnership will begin with St. Charles Health System, a private not-for-profit corporation that operates four hospitals with an active medical staff of 350 physicians. Recently, St. Charles selected Allscripts to provide its Electronic Health Record and Practice Management solution for the health system's employed and affiliated physicians. St. Charles will receive O-HITEC's high-level support to effectively meet the federal Meaningful Use standards.
Making an Electronic Health Record available to the Central Oregon physician community represents an important first step in the St. Charles' plan to build an integrated health model across the communities it serves. The EHR data will eventually be pulled into a health information exchange, which will allow the health system's hospitals and physicians to securely exchange health information, including test results and other clinical information. Importantly, it will also allow for the aggregation and analysis of data, which will be a boon to clinical research and the practice of evidence-based medicine.
"This represents significant progress toward the creation of an integrated delivery system, and ultimately, toward helping achieve our goals of improving the patient experience, reducing per capita cost and improving the overall health of the population," said William Winnenberg, St. Charles' Chief Information Officer. "This is great news for physicians and patients."
In addition to OCHIN/O-HITEC's support, independent physicians with referring privileges to St. Charles facilities will have a portion of the cost of the Allscripts solution underwritten by the health system.
"Through this partnership, OCHIN is reducing the complexity around choosing an Electronic Health Record for Oregon physicians, while also simplifying the process of implementing and operating solutions provided by Allscripts," said Glen Tullman, Chief Executive Officer of Allscripts. "We look forward to working closely with OCHIN and St. Charles Health System to help Oregon's physicians improve both quality and safety in their delivery while at the same time eliminating waste and better managing costs."
The Allscripts Electronic Health Record and Practice Management solution is an easy-to-deploy, physician-centric solution. The Electronic Health Record provides caregivers instant and secure access to the complete patient record anytime and anywhere, while automating everyday clinical tasks and connecting physicians to pharmacies, laboratories and other healthcare stakeholders. The integrated Practice Management solution improves the productivity of administrative staff, simplifies patient record keeping, streamlines billing and improves cash flow, with the industry's most user-friendly interface and extensible design.
