Oberweis Dairy Issues Voluntary Allergen Alert on Undeclared Egg in Brownie Fudge Twirl Ice Cream Quarts
NORTH AURORA, Ill., May 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Oberweis Dairy, Inc. of North Aurora, Illinois is recalling quarts of Brownie Fudge Twirl Ice Cream because it may contain undeclared eggs. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to eggs run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products. Brownie Fudge Twirl Ice Cream quarts were distributed almost exclusively through the company's retail stores and through its home delivery service with extremely limited distribution through 7 grocery locations in Illinois and Wisconsin. The product is in black quart containers with a gold rim on the lid displaying the flavor "Brownie Fudge Twirl."
No other Oberweis products are affected by this, and no illnesses have been reported. People who do not have egg allergies or sensitivities can eat the product without concern.
The product concerned has UPC 616029064550 made at plant #17-61 (all dates).
This alert was initiated after the Company's own internal packaging review process identified that that product containing eggs was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of eggs. Subsequent investigation revealed that Oberweis had submitted the change (triggered by a change in the brownie inclusion) to the maker of the packaging, but the change was not made on the packaging itself in error.
Consumers who have purchased quarts of Oberweis Brownie Fudge Twirl Ice Cream quarts are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund or replacement. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 866-623-7934.
