THE CULMINATION OF A YEAR IN ENACT'S DROPOUT PREVENTION PROGRAM
NEW YORK, May 27 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- SHOW UP! 2010 is the culmination of a year of work by students enrolled in the ENACT Dropout Prevention Programs. The performance will build upon ENACT's workshops with students, crafting an entire program of theater that incorporates humor, drama and rhythm to offer a window into the daily challenges that students face in the New York City public school system – challenges that can easily become barriers to graduation.
In collaboration with the New York City Council's Dropout Prevention and Intervention Initiative, the United Way of New York City and the Department of Education, ENACT has developed their unique Dropout Prevention Program. The program engages students considered at-risk for dropping out in four partnership schools throughout New York City: Legacy School for Integrated Studies and Repertory Company High School for Theatre Arts in Manhattan (both of which are city-wide schools), MS 399 in the South Bronx and MS 8 in Jamaica, Queens.
In these schools, ENACT becomes fully integrated into the fabric of the school community. In addition to daily workshops and after-school sessions, the program incorporates wrap-around social service programs with social workers and drama therapists. Full-time staff is headquartered at each school to facilitate programming targeted specifically toward increased attendance, decreased dropout rates and increased promotion.
ENACT is a New York City based non-profit organization that trains and employs professional actors as teaching artists to teach public school students social and emotional skills using creative theater and drama therapy techniques. ENACT creates a safe and effective learning environment, within which students learn to identify and manage their emotions and behavior in order to thrive in the classroom and beyond.
