WASHINGTON, Dec. 1, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National Press Club will draw attention to Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian's 500 days of wrongful detention in Iran by publicly reading his stories for a 24-hour period beginning at 7am Friday Dec. 4.
The reading, which will occur in the Club's Bloomberg Room, will be open to the public and webcast on the Club's home page, press.org. During the 24-hour period the Club will also raise awareness of some of the other journalists being wrongly held, including Khadija Ismayilova and Austin Tice.
"Jason is a gifted journalist and I can't think of a better way to draw attention to his continued, unjust imprisonment in Iran than reading his work for the world to hear,'' National Press Club President John Hughes said.
Iranian security forces arrested Rezaian in his home in Tehran on July 22, 2014. Last month, he was sentenced to prison after a closed-door trial in which he was convicted on charges including espionage. The length of the sentence was not disclosed.
The National Press Club, the Washington Post and numerous other organizations have decried the charges and process as unjust and demanded that Rezaian be set free. The Club and its Press Freedom Committee have held several events in 2015 to draw attention to Rezaian's plight, including giving him one of the organization's highest honors in July.
