Northwestern Medical Group Launches Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery Program
Surgeons are fellowship trained in minimally invasive gynecologic techniques
CHICAGO, Dec. 2, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Looking to serve as a resource for women and their primary health providers, Northwestern Medical Group now offers a Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery Program with an outpatient clinic located at Chicago's Northwestern Memorial Hospital, performing laparoscopic, hysteroscopic and robotic-assisted surgery for complex, benign gynecologic conditions.
Focused on conditions such as abnormal uterine bleeding, pelvic pain, endometriosis, symptomatic fibroids and large ovarian cysts, the group is building upon Northwestern Medicine's recognized academic expertise and expansive research to offer specialized treatment with faster recovery times and safer outcomes. The surgeons in the practice are all faculty of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and are board-certified specialists with advanced training in minimally invasive surgical techniques. They also work closely with a team of providers including interventional radiology, physical therapy, psychology and pain specialists to provide a multidisciplinary approach to complex conditions.
"The top hospitals in the country have developed centers of excellence for minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, and we are among them," said Magdy Milad, MD, MS, chief of gynecology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, a reproductive surgeon, professor and division head of the minimally invasive gynecologic surgery program. "We are continuing to build on our leadership in advancements in gynecologic care."

"The goal of this program is to provide excellent gynecologic care to the women of Chicago," said Angela Chaudhari, MD, a gynecologic surgeon who is also an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Feinberg. "Minimally invasive procedures are consistently associated with better outcomes and lower complication rates. We wanted to create a center where patients can come to get more specialized multidisciplinary care."
Northwestern Medicine is home to significant research in the field of gynecology. Serdar Bulun, MD, Northwestern Medicine's chair of obstetrics and gynecology, is an internationally known expert in endometriosis, a painful condition resulting from endometrial tissue outside the uterus. Bulun also directs the Uterine Leiomyoma Research Center Program, the only NIH-funded fibroid research program in the world.
Under the leadership of Dr. Erica Marsh, Northwestern Medicine also participates as one of 10 investigational sites in a landmark study seeking to improve treatment of uterine fibroids, the most common noncancerous tumors in women of childbearing age and the second most common reason these women undergo surgery.
Finally, the new minimally invasive gynecologic surgery program partners regularly with other specialized Northwestern Medicine programs including the Integrated Pelvic Health Program, Gynecologic Oncology, and Fertility and Reproductive Medicine.
