BROOMFIELD, Colo., March 11, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Level 3 Communications, Inc. (NYSE: LVLT) today announced Northrop Grumman Corporation has selected the company to deliver network services as part of the defense contractor's multi-million dollar agreement with the U.S. Air Force to support their distributed simulation training network.
As part of the Distributed Mission Operation Network (DMON), Level 3 has connected more than 50 sites worldwide. The simulator network consists of mission training centers and network operations centers for the U.S. Air Force to conduct virtual combat training. The training center simulators transmit high-resolution images and training communications in real-time. From fighter jets to cargo planes, simulation training prepares pilot and crew for a range of missions and field challenges, including complicated maneuvers such as in-air refueling exercises.
Use of the distributed simulation network also provides multi-platform training for remote squadrons, dramatically increasing mission success rates and reducing mission incidents. The U.S. Air Force also relies on simulation training to reduce costly aircraft hours and conduct preparation missions that are prohibitively expensive with aircraft.
"The Level 3 network is incorporated into the distributed training solutions Northrop Grumman provides to the U.S. Air Force," said Edward Morche, senior vice president of East Region Enterprise and Government Markets for Level 3 Communication. "The U.S. Air Force benefits from the global reach and low-latency performance of the Level 3 network to deliver the highest-quality training experience and realize efficiencies across various training networks and programs both in the United States and abroad."
"At Northrop Grumman, we are pleased to leverage our longstanding relationship with Level 3 to deliver on our commitments to the U.S. Air Force," said Lisa Harris, Northrop Grumman's Program Manager for USAF Distributed Mission Operations Network. "Level 3 will provide fully redundant and secure, global network connectivity for the U.S. Air Force to conduct virtual training for pilots with the most advanced equipment and scenarios to ensure combat readiness."
Referred to as "Distributed Mission Operations Network 2.0," the renewal of the U.S. Air Force contract with Northrop Grumman was announced in July 2013. Under the initial DMON contract, announced in 2003, Level 3 has been providing Northrop Grumman with network services, such as Ethernet Private Line and Dedicated Internet Access, as part of two distinct network initiatives for the U.S. Air Force.
