North Highland's Dr. Ricardo Martinez Published In Health Affairs And Invited To Speak At National Press Club
ATLANTA, Dec. 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Health Affairs, a leading peer-reviewed journal of health policy and research, published an article by North Highland's chief medical officer, Ricardo Martinez, M.D., FACEP, in its December issue. Dr. Martinez was invited to share his perspective on "Creating Integrated Networks of Emergency Care: From Vision to Value," and will share his insights this morning at the Health Affairs briefing on "Reinventing Emergency Care" at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Martinez discusses the current state of emergency care in the U.S. and shares recommended steps to regionalize and improve emergency care by leveraging emerging models of care and technology. The article identifies challenges and opportunities in five domains: people, quality and processes, technology, finances, and jurisdictional politics.
"Emergency care is fragmented and outdated," explains Dr. Martinez. "The growth of technology and digital data allows us to design patient-centered systems that moves care decisions to patients that need them rather than move the patient to physicians at another facility. The bottom line is that we have the opportunity to get the right care to the right patient at the right place and the right time."
North Highland sees healthcare changing through four interconnected transformations-digital, clinical, financial, and organizational. These transformations are driven by more than just politics but also economic, social and technology changes.
"Dr. Martinez is an innovative leader and has made significant contributions to emergency medicine throughout his distinguished career," said Fletcher Lance, vice president and national health care leader. "We're very proud that Dr. Martinez was invited to write an article for Health Affairs as well as present at the National Press Club."
Dr. Martinez is a nationally recognized healthcare executive with experience in academics, business and government service. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine and currently serves as an assistant professor of emergency medicine at Emory University School of Medicine, practicing clinically at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.
