Nine-Year-Old Breaks 30-Year-Old Track & Field World Record by Almost 16 Seconds
NEW ORLEANS, May 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Jude Burst, a third grade honor student at St. Paul's Episcopal in New Orleans, shattered a 30-year-old world record in the nine-year-old age group for 3000 meters. The previous record at 10:36 was set in 1980 by Coley Candaele of California. Jude's time, sanctioned by USA Track & Field was 10:20:16, shattered the record by almost 16 seconds.
This record adds to a growing list of accolades as young Jude continues to leave his mark on the record books.
Jude discovered his love of running at seven years old in December 2007 at a fun run, his first competitive race, in which he ran two miles in 13:46. In July 2009, as an eight-year-old, he won the sub-bantam 1500 meters at the National Club Championships at Disney Wide World of Sports while setting a meet record with a time of 505.60. He then won the gold medal in the 1500m for the AAU Junior Olympics in August 2009. In November 2009, Jude won the nine-10 year-old division in the 3000 meter at the Footlocker Cross Country Championships with a time of 10:53.
The world record was set in New Orleans at "The Meet Under the Lights," an annual track meet hosted by Pat Gavin and Ann Roedecker, former LSU runners who also own "The Louisiana Running Company."
Jude is part of the New Orleans "Metro Stars," an AAU track team coached by Virgil and Loretta Johnson. Jude wore the Nike Zoom Victory shoes in his world record feat.
