New Therapeutic Skin Care Line From The Makers Of Cetaphil Now Available To Treat Challenged Skin
FORT WORTH, Texas, Oct. 8, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Galderma Laboratories, L.P., makers of Cetaphil, today unveiled a new therapeutic skincare line precisely engineered for challenged skin – Excipial. It will be available over the counter and without a prescription. Excipial products are formulated with the exact mix of the right ingredients to heal, relieve, protect and repair the most irritated and frustrated skin.
Dry skin is one of the most common skin abnormalities. Some estimates suggest that almost 40% of Americans have experienced some form of dry, chapped or cracking skin. This unfortunate condition can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender or skin type. A disruption in healthy skin levels can be attributed to weather conditions, disease states or even as a side effect of treatments prescribed for other maladies. Some occupations, including professional chefs, kitchen staff, hair colorists, surgical physicians and nurses, often endure dry skin as an occupational hazard, struggling with challenged skin due to excessive hand-washing and chemicals they are interacting with daily.
"Dry, irritated skin is a common problem that can be bothersome for some but debilitating for others," said leading NYC dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD. "The skin plays a vital role in protecting the body from the environment. When the barrier is compromised, it can lead not only to changes in the skin's cosmetic appearance but more importantly its overall health. Caring for and protecting your skin with the right therapeutic products is of the utmost importance."
The new Excipial line includes: Excipial Daily Protection Hand Cream and Excipial Rapid Repair Hand Cream, Excipial 10% Urea Hydrating Healing Lotion and Excipial 20% Urea Intensive Healing Cream, as well as Excipial for Bruising. Developed by dermatologists, these product formulations were designed to target the most challenging skin problems with an understanding of the way skin works, including the way it breaks down.
Hydration is an important factor in skin health. Hydrated skin not only looks and feels better – it is actually healthier. As the skin loses moisture, it becomes more susceptible to entry of chemicals, allergens and microbes. While it may seem that putting water on the skin would moisturize it more, the opposite is true.
Plain water that comes in contact with skin evaporates and takes with it many of the skin's natural molecules called natural moisturizing factor (NMF), a collection of water-soluble compounds that are only found in the outermost layer of the skin. NMF components absorb moisture from the atmosphere and combine it with their own water content, allowing the outermost layers of the skin to stay hydrated despite exposure to the elements. Because NMF components are water soluble, they are easily leached from the cells with water contact - which is why repeated contact with water actually makes the skin drier. The more frequently skin comes into contact with water, the drier it gets, unless the skin's own hydrating components are replaced.
In fact, transepidermal water loss, or TEWL, defines the amount of water that passes out of the skin through diffusion and evaporation. It's an important determinant in identifying the integrity of the skin barrier and there is a correlation between increased TEWL levels and level of damage to the skin.
"Galderma is rooted in skin science, and our Excipial formulations were medically designed with a keen understanding of how the skin works and how to best counteract challenging skin conditions," said Miles Harrison, Vice President and General Manager of the Self-medication Business Unit of Galderma Laboratories, L.P. "With the launch of this advanced therapeutic line, our goal is to deliver on precise, scientifically driven solutions to help individuals with every skin type achieve targeted results."
According to Todd Zavodnick, President and General Manager of Galderma North America, "Galderma is committed to providing innovative medical solutions to people with skin health needs at all stages of life. The new Excipial line exemplifies this unique commitment."
In clinical studies, the new Excipial Protect and Repair line, which includes Excipial Daily Protection Hand Cream and Excipial Rapid Repair Hand Cream was shown to significantly reduce TEWL. A key ingredient in the Daily Protection Hand Cream is aluminum chlorohydrate, providing glove-like protection around the skin that helps contain the natural oils or lipids, preventing evaporation or diffusion. The Rapid Repair Hand Cream includes tocopherol, providing end of day relief for hard-working hands as well as ingredients to soothe dry, itchy skin. Tocopherols are organic chemical compounds that have properties of vitamin E.
Urea is a natural component of the skin's tissues and makes up 7% of its NMF. Its role within the stratum corneum (the outer layer of skin), is to maintain a healthy moisture balance, keeping the skin soft and supple. It is extremely hydrating and moisturizing, and helps bring relief to dry skin.
Lotions and creams containing urea have been shown to reduce scaling and cracking; improve dryness and pruritis (itchiness); improve TEWL and water-binding capacity; and reduce induration (roughness). Further, Urea is medically proven to alleviate dryness and itchiness associated with eczema, ichthyosis, keratosis pilaris, hyperkeratosis and psoriasis.
While several over the counter products currently contain some percentage of urea, the new Excipial line includes a lotion and cream that contain significantly more urea than commonly found, providing more intensive relief. Excipial 10% Urea Hydrating Healing Lotion is an all over healing lotion that continuously hydrates to heal dry skin and soothe itchy, rough skin. It helps restore the skin's natural hydration system by replenishing reduced levels of natural urea and hydrating throughout the day to relieve dry, damaged, itchy skin.
Excipial 20% Urea Intensive Healing Cream is a fast-acting cream that hydrates to heal dry skin and sloughs away extremely dry or damaged skin on hands, elbows, knees and feet. It restores the skin's natural hydrating system and deeply moisturizes to smooth away cracked, rough skin.
Aging skin is also susceptible to senile purpura, which typically affects elderly patients as their skin tissues weaken and blood vessels become more fragile. This can lead to developing persistent dark purple discoloration of the skin resulting from bleeding underneath, giving the appearance of bruising. Normally, the discoloration is confined to the hands and forearms, and the bruising can appear without recognized trauma. This discoloration may clear over weeks to months or may be permanent. Some medicines, including aspirin and corticosteroids may even exacerbate the condition.
Excipial for Bruising is an oral supplement specially formulated to minimize the appearance of bruising and support healthy-looking skin. It supports blood vessel health with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and is ideally used for bruising due to senile purpura.
Excipial Availability
All of the Excipial products will be available exclusively at CVS in-store and online at cvs.com on October 5th. The line will be available at additional national retail and online outlets beginning January, 2015.
