New Study Shows CLn® BodyWash Yields Significant Improvements as an Adjunctive Skin Cleanser in Moderate-to-Severe Eczema
- Daily use offers a convenient alternative to bleach baths for management of eczema -
DENVER, March 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- A new, independently-conducted study being presented at the 72nd Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) shows that daily use of CLn® BodyWash (a novel gel cleanser preserved with sodium hypochlorite) yields significant improvement in pediatric patients with eczema.
The study presents 40 subjects from pediatric outpatient dermatology clinics located in Houston and Chicago. The primary objective was to evaluate the therapeutic response of atopic dermatitis in infection-prone, moderate-to-severe S. aureus colonized patients who use CLn® BodyWash as a daily cleanser. The study also evaluated changes in itchiness, patient tolerability and quality of life after daily use of the product. Patients were assessed over several visits during a six week period in an open-label intervention, utilizing multiple measurement tools that evaluate the severity and extent of atopic dermatitis, including: Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI), Investigator Global Assessment (IGA), Body Surface Areas (BSA), Pruritus Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Children's Dermatology Life Quality Index (CDLQI) and the Family Dermatology Life Quality Index (FDLQI).
The results will be presented at the AAD via poster #7728, "A Novel New Sodium Hypochlorite Formulated Wash as an Adjunctive Approach to the Management of Pediatric Subjects with Moderate to Severe Atopic Dermatitis Colonized with Staphylococcus aureus," from 2:50 – 2:55 pm MDT on Saturday, March 22, in Hall A at Center 2. Data highlights include:
- Eczema Severity improved by more than 30 percent
- The body surface area of the eczema decreased by more than 20 percent at week two and one-third by week three, as did the global severity scores
- Itch scores were significantly better at both time points, with almost a 40 percent decrease
- Quality of life was markedly improved throughout the study
"This data is tremendous in showing the impact of this product on eczema and the quality of life for children with atopic dermatitis," said Dr. Lawrence Eichenfield, Professor of Pediatrics and Dermatology at Rady Children's Hospital and UC San Diego School of Medicine. "These results are particularly interesting considering the emerging scientific data that bleach-like solutions may be anti-inflammatory and able to decrease microbes on the skin."
About Atopic Dermatitis
Atopic dermatitis is the most common of the many types of eczema. Eczema is a skin condition caused by inflammation of the skin. Typically, eczema causes skin to become itchy, red and dry – even cracked and leathery. Eczema can appear on any part of the body and is a chronic problem for many people. This troublesome skin condition is most common in infants, many of whom will outgrow their eczema before reaching adulthood.
