New Jersey CyberKnife joins Community Medical Center to promote lung cancer screening program
Preventive screening initiative assesses risk and lung health of current and former smokers
TOMS RIVER, N.J., Sept. 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- New Jersey CyberKnife at the J. Phillip Citta Regional Cancer Center joins efforts to raise awareness for hospital partner Community Medical Center's lung cancer screening program.
Free lung cancer screening assessments for high-risk individuals will be offered at a special event on Wednesday, Sept. 17 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Clarion Hotel in Toms River, N.J. Patients meeting the criteria to undergo low-dose CT lung screening will be scheduled at this time. Physicians will be available to discuss lung cancer, its signs and symptoms and treatment options.
"The goal is to detect lung cancer in its early stages when it is much more curable than when found in later stages," said Dr. David D'Ambrosio, New Jersey CyberKnife medical director. "When patients begin showing symptoms, the cancer can already be at an advanced stage. This program offers those at high risk for developing the disease the chance to be diagnosed earlier and receive treatment sooner."
Earlier this year, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) released a finalized recommendation in favor of CT lung cancer screening for long-term smokers. The organization recommends annual lung cancer screenings for adults between the ages of 55 to 80 who have a 30-year history of smoking at least a pack a day and who currently smoke or have quit within the last 15 years. The recommendation marks major progress in diagnosing high-risk patients sooner.
"An early lung cancer diagnosis increases the likelihood of successful treatment and can give patients treatment options like CyberKnife® from which to choose," said Dr. Rajesh Iyer, Chief of Radiation Oncology at Community Medical Center.
New Jersey CyberKnife treats lung tumors with an advanced procedure called stereotactic body radiation therapy. Lung tumors are treated with high-dose, precisely focused radiation delivered in five or fewer outpatient treatments with CyberKnife technology. Due to the accuracy of the procedure, patients experience few to no side effects and typically resume normal routines following treatment.
